Registered 4 years agoJust looking for a recommendation for RPGs on PS3. I've been playing Ni No Kuni and loving every second of it.
I'm looking for games where dungeons/lands to be discovered and towns to be explored. Not a fan of shooting stuff so things like Mass Effect et al are not to my liking. I prefer story and puzzle driven games and close combat to shooting.
I have played Darksiders and consider this more of an action game with puzzle elements.
Played Final Fantasy and Demon Soul.
I guess I'm after traditional RPGs like the above. Any recommendations? -

Registered 4 years agoObvious recommendation would be Skyrim. Works alright now patched up. -

Registered 4 years agoTales of Graces f looks quite good. Shopto seem to be the cheapest.
Is Skyrim heavy on combat and less emphasis on exploration? Also, it's first person? -

Registered 6 years agoDragon Age maybe...it's very good and very story driven, but it sounds like you might be more into jrpg's.
Skyrim is about as exploration heavy as it's possible to get, but it's also got a lot of combat. It can be played in first or third person. It's not that story focussed and as with Dragon Age it's very good but it's western, not japanese, jrpg's (like ni no kuni) are almost an entirely different genre.

Registered 7 years agoBuy a PS2 Slim. There just weren't enough games of that type released this generation to even be able to choose, so you have to settle for rubbish like Eternal Sonata, Tales of Graces F and Enchanted Arms.
If you simply must have PS3 games take a look at the Atelier games, Atelier Meruru and Totori have something like the style you are looking for, Atelier Ayesha should be out this year also.
Nier is definitely worth a look if you don't mind an action RPG, Resonance of Fate and Folklore are worth finding out more about to see if they appeal to you.
Otherwise, pickings are slim unless you're looking for turn based strategy games, Disgaea and Valkyria Chronicles for instance. -

You can switch between first and third person. Split is about 50/50 although you can spend hours exploring, picking flowers or taking in the lore without fighting much at all. But there's enough options fighting battles in lots of different styles i.e. it's not a hack'n slash.

Registered 6 years agoDragon's Dogma is another one with a lot of exploration. But not much story, and though it's made by a Japanese developer it has more in common with western RPG's. -

Registered 10 years agoMaybe it's different for saves created before the recent patch, but I've been playing Skyrim on the PS3 lately and it seems just fine to me. The framerate chugs a little at times in the overworld, but it seems to maintain a solid 30fps inside cities, buildings and dungeons. I'm sure it's still objectively the worst version of the game, but it's perfectly playable (if you're starting on it now at least). -

Registered 6 years agoIn any case if a PS3 is all he's got and he's interested in Skyrim then the PS3 version is surely better than not getting it at all. -

Registered 4 years agoI have a PS3 only. Placed order for Tales of Graces F.
I'm also tempted by Dragons Dogma more than Skyrim mostly down to not wanting to reward the Skyrim developers for such substandard conversion. -

Registered 5 years ago@EuroStalker I hope you enjoy Dragon's Dogma as much as I did on PS3. Loved it. Take a look at the thread on here for loads of good advice.
Now moved on to Dark Souls PTD for PS3. A much harder game. Slow progress but fun all the same. -

Registered 8 years agoDragon's Dogma is awesome. Tons of exploration to be done, although it's very heavy on the combat too. Most encounters can be run from if you're so inclined though. Although now you're better waiting on the Dark Arisen expansion due at the end of April.
Have you also considered the White Knight Chronicles games? From the same developer as Ni No Kuni, and I believe they share a lot of the same DNA. -

Not played White Knight Chronicles. I may just look at that after completing Ni No Kuni. I'm rediscovering the joys of playing RPGs mainly. There's only so much shooting stuff one can take.. -

Registered 6 years agoWhite Knight Chronicles got royally shafted in the reviews.
I think you should read Cappy's advice above. His post is pretty comprehensive.
Valkyria Chronicles is the best PS3 game of the generation in my opinion. It is very Japanese but is a strategy JRPG not an adventure JRPG. (It is a spiritual sequel to one of the all time greatest adventure JRPGs though: Skies of Arcadia). -

Nooooooo. The PS1 port of FFVI is awful to begin with, so I can't imagine how terrible a bordered, even slower PAL version must be.

This is the bit where I get to brag that I have a working backwards compatible PS3. Unfortunately, I've played (I hope) most of the great RPGs on PS2.

I'm slightly bitter about RPGs going down the route of action as opposed to discovery and exploration in this generation. -
