I did notice whilst I was combing through the site for Xmas gifts that there aren't all that much "sold by play.com" items anymore. It seemed like at least 50% was only available from other sellers.
So it probably won't make a massive difference to your recent shopping experience (should you have one).

I always used CD-WOW in preference to play, if we are talking internet dinosaurs.

CD-WOW email me every week with the same 1 off email. I think Play247.com were my first online order.

CD-WOW were amazing for foreign DVDs and really cheap. Then, one day, they decided to start charging 50% more for things than anywhere else.

Seriously, I used to get cd-wow packages almost daily. I think almost every kung-fu and anime DVD I owned came from there.

I stopped using play years ago after the stopped dispatching pre-orders early. After about 3 orders turned up the Monday after I swore never to use them again.

Shame, they used to be awesome.

@nickthegun yea cd-wow were great for cheap anime, ive got a number of region 4 "perfect collections" sitting on my shelves.

Used to use cd wow and play.com a lot about 10 years ago as they were about the only places I could use my shitty "solo" debit card.

    What's all this then?

    http://www.rakuten.co.uk/

"Coming soon to the UK", "In the meantime, shop at play.com"

Probably planning to ditch the Play brand entirely long-term. The Rakuten logo has dwarfed the Play one for quite a while on Play.com, getting UK shoppers familiar with the name and logo.

Almost certainly why Play is stopping trading, then, purely ending up being a name change for their own sales site along with moving operations to the UK mainland, now there's no tax benefit to being based in Jersey.

My earliest recorded order, but I'm sure I recall using them before this and they "dropped" older orders in a site/database update:

    15 Jan 2001
    Order no: 973584
    Item price: 17.99

    Farscape Volumes 2.1 & 2.2 (2 Discs) (Region 2 DVD)
    Sold by: Play.com

    Dispatched: 09 Mar 2001
    Delivery option: Free Delivery
    Delivery estimate: 3-5 working days

    And Amazon.com:

    Order Placed:April 5, 2000
    Order Details | Invoice

    Order Number: 002-1316617-4679463
    Order Total: $26.94

Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
    Tobey Maguire(Actor), et al
    Sold by: Amazon.com LLC

Not sure why it says Tobey Maguire was in it, when it's a Johnny Depp film.

Tobey Maguire was the hitch hiker at the start of the movie, not sure why he'd be listed first on a DVD listing though.

@nickthegun I know it's a bit late for a reply, but CD-WOW started charging more for DVDs as they were hit with import tax or something. Whatever it was, I remember at the time them having some form of press release as to what happened. I was pretty much overnight as you said. In fact the (shoddy) Wikipedia article explains it:

On 29 May 2007, the former owners of CD WOW! were ordered by the High Court to pay 41 million in damages to the BPI for breaching a 2004 agreement over the sale of imported CDs.

Haven't used Play for years. Great customer service back in the days I did use them though. I've spent about 2K with them over the years.
