Anyone know if the recent Lost Tales are any good?

Registered 5 years agoOne thing I liked about B5 was the sense there was still elements of our own times still present in 2260. Little things like Garibaldi watching Daffy Duck cartoons and cursing the LA Dodgers.
Also there's a greater sense of what's happened in mankind's history between now and the 2250/60s. Wars on earth and against aliens, Martian colonization/revolts, the telepaths, etc. -

Ah ok, I might give it a go once BSG is out of the way then, as it's not a terribly long series after all.M83J01P97 wrote:
Well thats exactly what I did. All DS9, then all BSG in the last few months.. now im watching B5 and thoroughly enjoying it.
Ergh... I so want to watch B5 properly (only saw an episode here and there when it was on TV) but have just got into the new BSG and after starting to watch all of DS9 from the start earlier this year I kind of think watching B5 now just won't be as good as it could be without all the other great Sci-Fi running through my head... -

Registered 8 years agoI thought Babylon 5 was great although I haven't really seen it since its original broadcast apart from perhaps the odd VHS tape I'd bought. I remember it being quite dark and moody. I don't recall any poor acting, although I felt the actor who played Sinclair in the first seaon was miscast, and the main story arc was very engrossing. I loved the ending too even though it wasn't good news for Sheridan.
I've often considering buying the full DVD boxset as Amazon have it for £62 (40 discs too!) but I'm not sure I want to risk it at that price. As I've found out with the recent Buck Rogers in the 25th Century DVD boxsets I've bought, not everything you thought was great when you were 13 is still great now (BR is silly and fun but also incredibly shallow, juvenille and cheap). Fortunately, the same wasn't true of Blake's 7 and Sapphire & Steel, both of which seem as good now as they were back then.PS3, PS Vita, PC (Intel Core i7-4770K, 16 GB, 3 GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780, Windows 8 Pro), iPad 4

Registered 8 years agoI wonder if they will ever release it on Blu-Ray?
Like maybe on 5 discs - one per season?
Because that would be both wonderful and horrible.
Wonderful because I love the show and haven't really watched it proeprly since first airing.
Horrible because those 'special' effects will look pretty rough in hi def. -

I agree more background would have been good, but the King Arthur episode was brilliant - really moving tale of guilt and redemption, which added to the background too. I'm filling up even now.nickthegun wrote:
Ahem. Fixed. Truly, a great series. If only the crap "let's fill an hour with typical sci-fi nonsense" episodes had been replaced with deeper, "background exploration of the arc" episodes. I'm looking at you, "old guy who thinks he's King Arthur" episode. Would've replaced that with a "day in the life of a Narn, under Centauri occupation" episode straightaway.DDevil wrote:
They could have done without the sparkly magicians capes, but they were probably the best realised 'Alien' aliens, especially their tech.
I always thought the Vorlons were the best designed TV Sci-Fi alien species ever. In terms of looks at least.
Especially, when they were finally juxtaposed against the shadows. Their yin/yang nature was revealed and it was cool to see they both had world destroyers and that kind of thing. -

Registered 7 years agoTo interject with a question about BSG - is there ever any explanation why a bundle of deepsleep copies of the 12 just happen to turn up in positions of power on the only surviving Battlestar (excluding Pegasus), especially Tigh? This can't be a fleetwide infiltration as the copies would be noticed. Amazing that the multiple 6s weren't picked up as well.
To add a flavour on topic - I liked that throwaway Starfury pilot in the second series, they really showed they weren't afraid to fuck with recurring characters. Ditto Londo's ultracorrupt Centauri mate Lord Rifa.LB, you really are a massive geek.

Yup, one of B5s really strong points, just one of the things that made it stand out. Made it feel like the story was far more important than the characters (as oppose to STNG, with the same half dozen dudes forever. More or less).

Registered 8 years agoIt doesn't take much to outdo Star Trek on story, though, they only have a few plot lines: weird space thing, seemingly peaceful but actually hostile/troublesome aliens, it's all a dream and oh no the holodeck is broken again. -

Registered 8 years agoIt was fantastic when Rifa got it though - a fitting end.
Sinclairs gf in the first series too - "I'll be fine, you worry too much" as she blithely warped off to find her fortune. Ha. -
The 2 things that really stood out about Babylon 5 for me were:
1) It wasn't a utopia. Human suffering, poverty etc were still problems, and caused problems that these situations brred (Terrorism for example)
2) The aliens were varried, and in most cases very morally grey. No black and white evil/good -

The whole thing was orchestrated by Cavil (Dean Stockwell) who placed them there as a punishment for not giving him 'nuff respect.
(But yer - the plot is full of holes - mostly because they made it up as they went along - as the producers freely admit, they didn't know the ending when they wrote the beginning.) -

Registered 8 years agoI ordered the first three season DVD boxsets from Amazon this morning for £10 each then found out that season 1 does NOT include the pilot "The Gathering" so I had to order that DVD too. I understand the DVD season boxsets are widescreen but the pilot is 4:3 only which is disappointing.
Are the DVD boxsets individual slimline cases inside a cardboard sleeve like the Lost and Heroes ones or are they solid plastic cases like the X-Files DVD reissues?
Anyway once I've watched the first three seasons I'll then order the remaining two. I'm looking forward to rewatching it as I haven't seen it in years.PS3, PS Vita, PC (Intel Core i7-4770K, 16 GB, 3 GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780, Windows 8 Pro), iPad 4

Registered 8 years agoI got the first three season boxsets plus The Gathering pilot and The Beginning DVDs in this morning's post. The slimline season boxsets rock, I can't believe there's 22 episodes of a TV series on six DVDs packed away into a solid plastic case that is just a little fatter than a standard case. Neeeeeeat..gif)
I watched the pilot first - which wasn't as good as I remembered, had terrible music and special effects plus some very dodgy acting - and then the first seven episodes of season 1, which were never the strongest ones anyway. It's slowly getting better though and I can't wait to see Babylon Squared again because I seem to remember that's the point where series really took off.PS3, PS Vita, PC (Intel Core i7-4770K, 16 GB, 3 GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780, Windows 8 Pro), iPad 4

I'll say this for the 'lost tales' thing, it was pretty cool seeing the station and the ships done with updated CGI, especially that Starfury. Shame he didn't get to do a 'proper' episode...
