I'm in the middle of rewatching it on fx and, it's still fantastic.

It's the caliber of the actors that really make it as has been said. Scenes between g'kar and molari are just electric. Watching it back now, it really is no surprise they got rid of Sinclair. He's an absolutely terrible actor straight from a 50s sci-fi and he really drags the first season down.

Sheridan took everything to the next level and really rounded the cast off.

Yup. B5 is so good it actually gets better with repeated viewings. Little hints of things to come you didn't notice before become apparent, and you can enjoy the story and character development more (which are ultimately what lifts it above pretty much everything else) without having to nailbite over what is going to happen.

    Certainly on my best-things-evah list.

Well now. It has several hot women in it, which encouraged me to keep watching it to the end. There is a problem though in that it had several producers, and a change of style (big plot --> episodic casual watchign --> big plot again).

But it has Laura Bertram as a blue alien and also of course Lexa Doig as a hot computer, and then Brandy Ledford as the same computer, later on, also hotter.

By the end you will also be drinking alcohol to force yourself through it much like the characters were in the final season.

Heh I think your reactions to this show have progressed pretty much as mine did, I watched it for the first time (apart from having caught the odd episode here and there) about a year ago.

    Rumour mill time

According to Walter (Bester/Chekov) Koenig, JMS is working on getting the full rights for B5 from Warner Brothers. It might just be for legal reasons or it might be so he can make new B5 stuff.

Though I did wonder that since Koenig is the one that knows about this, it might be a Telepath War story, which Bester would assumably be a big part of.

Interesting. I remember after the first Lost Tales DVD JMS saying that he wouldn't do any more B5 unless it was properly funded and promoted. If he can secure the money then we might get that film he's been on about for years.

I'm not getting my hopes up but I'd certainly like more stuff from the B5 universe, we could certainly do with some good SF TV these days, shite like Falling Skies and Torchwood are insulting.

My understanding was that Koening himself was actually trying to acquire the rights. JMS may not be involved.

While Sinclair's acting did often jar, I remember that they didn't get rid of him on purpose. The planned story arc was that you'd see him turn into what he did eventually turn into anyway - the thingy from history that saved B4.

Instead, Sheridan gets a new arc that utilises a similar narrative.

Yeah, they did get rid of him on purpose as jms and the actor both agreed that the character wasn't working.

The first couple of pages of this thread are hard work, the low budget and bad acting hold it back, but then it really gets going as it builds towards The Conversion Of Razz on page 6. One of the best threads about sci-fi around.

I always thought Sinclair worked in the context of the overall story - he never seemed to appear comfortable or at ease whilst in charge of B5, and that suited his background history. Always seemed very detached from what was going on - again which suited the story in the end.

Also I'd echo what others say here, sci fi today is just pure rubbish and it's almost becoming a sport that I can predict with ease; "how many episodes before canned" - take Terra Nova for instance - one episode and I called it...... Torchwood would be dead as well if a private company was actually paying for it rather than the BBC.....

Michael O'Hare was more of a theatre actor so switching to a weekly TV schedule was a bit of a culture shock to him.

Even though season 1 is patchy, I still love it though, it was at least obvious to Warner's execs that it was worth continuing with and they needed content for PTEN (which died on its arse eventually) as well.

One of my greatest gaming disappointments is that Babylon 5:Into The Fire never got completed.

The problem with modern sci-fi is that, as a genre, its stupidly expensive to produce so they try to hedge their bets with watered down shit that will have a broad appeal.

Its why theres been no 'hard' sci-fi for years because they think the young adult male demographic is too small, so we get shite that no one likes with wishy washy issues led drama.

It is quite ironic in a way that by broadening its appeal no fucker wants to see it.

That is badass. G'Kar and Londo make Babylon 5. Londo is a tragic character par excellence. The dinner scene he shares with Delenn and Sheridan in one of the last episodes is heartbreaking.

Just finished series 1 again. 10/10. Little hints from the first episode onwards of stories that will play out over 4 superb series. Characters behaving consistently, and developing. And compassion and love and empathy and good and evil and a lot inbetween. Even the Fall Guy fight scenes can be excused when telly is this good. Fucking great.

I's ridiculously good, still... I have to force people through the first couple of seasons for the show to "click" as it were. Let's be honest the over acting and cheesy dialogue does this show no favours.
