they should switch to Dragon boats!!! Waaaaay cooler ;-)

or slave galleys.... make those damnable students work for their education!

Other than that (/yawns), sounds like a perfect excuse for a long leisurely weekend Oblivion session (imnsho)

    Warning: extreme language follows.

I fucking hate the Boat Race. Twat toffs from Oxford and Cambridge swarm Putney and generally get in my face with their fucking wooley sweaters tied round their shoulders, their stupid fucking soft leather boater shoes and their shades either on their face (why??! It's not sunny!!!) or perched on their head, swigging from bottles of beer whilst perched on balconies that I didn't even know existed overlooking every Putney street, cheering and yah-ing at the commoners in the gutter, or talking loudly at each other about the merits of Oxford's biotechnology department over Cambridge's covered markets, and sorry darling I really must go because I'm at the Boat Race darling and then I'm off to East Dulwich for a dinner party with Harry and Bridget darling, but keep the 29th free, party at mine darling! Oooh, Charlotte's got the champers in, I really must go!

    FUCK!
    OFF!

Sorry, they really got in my way this evening when I was trying to get the bus to Clapham. :(

    ROFL Owen :-D

Insert obligatory 'fuck Oxford' comment here.

Things will all change when I get to Cambridge... no, I can't, it's a lie, I'll do nothing. We'll still lose :-(
  • Deleted user 3 April 2006 01:22:43
No but seriously, who (gives a fuck who) won?

But, otto, those people were there, they were doing those things, wearing those things and saying those things, and they got right in my sodding way, like they do every year.

I then sat on a bus with about 30 of them (and the same number of Australians - where do they come from?? Oh yeah, Australia... weird) and I can assure you they said nothing to confound my expectations. Perhaps they really are lovely people. Perhaps. I doubt I'd get on with them though...

There are, of course, exceptions to the rule. I take it you're one of them... ;)

EDIT: although I suspect you were being a touch 'baity' I don't see myself on the wrong side of an educational divide. Ya know, if I had to imagine a border, I'd see myself very much on the right one, what with the 4 years of university education and a subsequent year spent as an apprentice at a television/theatre/radio/film training facility.

I don't see a divide at all. I just don't like these people in general. I'll fully accept this a personal flaw in my own social skills though, because I spent 4 years at a private school as a kid, so I mixed with the younger versions of these people, and I downright loathed it. I just don't like them!

Hmm, well, it's also possible that things have changed a bit since I was a student. In my day we were all a bunch of lefties and wearing a college scarf was roughly the equivalent of dressing in a gestapo uniform. Perhaps these days it's "cool" again to be all Brideshead Revisited? In which case, I'll join you in raising two fingers... :)
It's possible you just hung out with a lot of very much more 'sorted' people. Trust me, the 'uniform' I described above was very much out in force tonight. It's quite something to behold.

I can see that Rooney is saying something, from the 'Last Post By:' note on the main page, but I can't see what it is!

    This is coooool!

He's probably being rude. Is he being rude? Oooh, the speculation! :D

  • Deleted user 3 April 2006 11:33:21
Nah, no college scarves, just the 'sweater round shoulders, deck shoes, sungalsses perched on head, pink shirts/rugby tops' combo...

For what its worth, I did the whole private boarding school thing, and loved every minute of it, then everyone went off to university.

Whenever we have a reunion, its the ex-OxBridge students who are far and away the biggest wankers going. Seriously, people who I spent 6 years growing up with, I now want to just kick in the face.

I was there, didn't have soft leather shoes or jumper tied round my shoulders. But I was cheering loudly for Cambridge!

We're not all like that, but the ones you see most readily are the ones that meet your expectations. The rest of us just get on with things and enjoy the one day in the year when you can be loudly oxbridge in public!

That's fairly similar to me. I had 9 years at boarding school, loved some aspects, hated some aspects (I wouldn't send my kids to one, put it that way). Out of the friends I had there the Oxford and Cambridge lot are pretty much all tossers, and the people who went to Durham are even worse. They were very ra ra toffs at school and I thought the Uni experience would have mellowed them. If anything it's made them worse. In general the guys who either didn't go to Uni and the ones who went to other Uni's are nice normal people

I think part of the problem there is not that those three unis are somehow exclusively "RaRa", but that there are a lot (but by no means even a majority) of people like that there and so there was no pressure at uni for them to mellow - it was easy for them to find a group which would only accentuate the traits you describe.

What you people seem to have against Oxbridge is the people that were already a bit ra ra toff at private school and then stayed that way or got worse at Oxbridge. Most of the people I socialise with at Oxford aren't like that at all and are just normal people who are pretty good at their chosen subject (which is a different thing from being intelligent or clever).

Anyway, stop all your bitching and let me enjoy victory over the tabs!
