So, it's the boat race tomorrow.

I've 'tried' to go to every one for over 10 years now as I live in the start area (near Putney) but I always seem to arrive late or miss it completely.

So for me it's basically an excuse for a piss up with some mates and the opportunity to laugh at some toffs.

Anyone else going tomorrow? And why is it starting at 6 tomorrow?

I figure since I've moved to London now I should do something cultural and go to the boat race but I'm ignoring that and going to a pub instead. Why do I feel it is similar stories all around? ;)

You are a factory of sadness.

    Boat race, "cultural"??
Well, you know what I mean, in the spirit, all that competition, all the interesting toing and froing.

Plus, a good excuse for a piss up is my idea of culture.

You are a factory of sadness.

quantumsheep: The Boat Race might be starting later than usual for various reasons.
    (1) To catch the tide right.
    (2) Arsenal play Man U at 4pm.
    (3) Also the clocks go forward; British Summer Time.

    Anyone going this year?

I'll be there of course, getting very drunk - so if you see me, yell out 'sheep!!!'

Although we're planning to make it an all day event so I may be a leetle beet tipsy and ignore you!

Chin chin, and come on Cambridge!!!

    Is the Pope Catholic?

Yep, I'll be down the pub, but not sure which one to be honest as I just follow my mates that look after the purse strings as it were.

We probably won't go anywhere too far. I'll send you an email madame. Maybe you and Lutz would like to join us for a drink!

Pity it's on at the same time as the England-Northern Ireland game, I bet ITV ins't expecting too big an audience for the race.

Hold on a sec peej... Let's just pause for a minute and look at the names of the two places:
Oxford - they found a nice, safe, shallow place to walk across the river, subsequently founding a university town there

Cambridge. Didn't even get their feet wet!

Come on the light blues! :)

    Lutz?

Am I having an affair with another one of the EG lot? I hope Lutzie's missus doesn't mind too much :)

(It's rutty btw who I've found myself entangled with!)

Well I look a bit silly then! Isn't it normally on a Saturday?

Oh well I'll be missing it due to a football match as I'll be at the Aldershot-Woking match which is on Sky tomorrow! ;-)

    Come on Oxford!

I wonder if they'll be broadcasting the feeds from the coxes after last year when the Cambridge cox started swearing and the BBC had to apologise profusely.

We used to slog down to Putney for this, until we decided that having a BBQ and watching it on the TV is infinitely more enjoyable...

I've lived in the area for many many years, so not really a slog for me.

Love the atmosphere, and how a crowd of hundreds of spectators, after the boats have disappeared from sight, literally does a communal 180 degree turn and heads for the nearest pub ;)

or as I put it my friend who's organising the party this year:

I'm TOO OLD to fek off all the way to Putney bridge in the f***ing rain, queuing for 3 hours to get served a pint of warm beer in a plastic mug in 'The Shit' then get sniffed by foxes as I try and find an unattended bush to piss into

    :)

I'm going to watch it on TV. Couldn't be arsed with the whole trekking into London doodah. I do have a far more personal interest in it that I used to though. My parents always used to support Cambridge (boo!), although they don't quite know why, but now they support Oxford (yay!).

    Dark blue ftw!*

*Not that you really have to qualify because the Cambridge light blue is almost green
