There are certain criteria that have to be there for it to work. In terms of what period to set it in, I think the earliest they can go is the 60s. Any earlier and you wouldn’t really be able to have the same range of vehicles or weaponry that is expected in these games.

And you have similar limitations for the place. It has to be set somewhere where there’s a good amount of variety in rich and poor people, with the appropriate vehicles to match this. Something like GTA China wouldn’t work for example.

I think the US has probably been done to death, my suspicion is that the next one will be set abroad. GTA: Europe would be very cool, as would one set in Japan. Just got a feeling it will be central/south America though…

    GTA Hong Kong.

Or GTA: Victorian London. That would be minty fresh. Horse and carts, Jack the Ripper, Phileas Fogg, bicycles, sweeney todd etc etc. Bloody brill.

So, the latest rumour is that GTA V is set in hollywood............

Im clinging onto the "GTA : Swansea" rumour.

Didn't San Andreas have a Hollywood inspired part of the map? I imagine it will be San Andreas again.

I think so. They don't have to make an engine, so it's just a case of filling in the content. Given that the generation's somewhat elongated, I'd be amazed if we don't get one before the end. We got three last generation, remember.

Agreed, but we have (kind of) really had 3 this time to. I think late 2011 ? I bet it is an update of one of the ps2/psp games.

if there is do you think it will be rockstar north then? Seeing as they're already working on another game that isn't GTA (I think?)
edit: yeah just googled it, they're working on Agent.

Indeed there was, Vinewood in Los Santos.

    This space left intentionally blank.

We've 'kind of' had three, but we've only had one city. It'd be nice to get at least one more city out of that engine.

My vote goes to it being San Andreas again then.

They've also got all the LA work they did for Midnight Club. Be bonkers not to use it.

It'll be punted as GTA Vinewood. You saw it here first, people.

    Maybe.

Lets hope they sort the on foot controls so it no longer feels like manoeuvring an oil tanker. After playing RDR recently it reminded me how terrible the on foot GTA controls are and its one area Rockstar really need to pull their finger out on.

Ooooh, they've also got the driving model from Midnight Club too. Fingers crossed they use that rather than that bollocks they used in IV.

Be interested to see if they get universal tens in the reviews this time around..

  • Deleted user 26 July 2010 11:10:49
Please let it be GTA:SA 2.

SA was easily the best GTA.

I didnt like San Andreas as much as the other GTAs, so thats not great news... I suppose its logical, however, to return to that setting now (unless they go really radical and choose Glasgow etc!). I just got tired of the gangsta/rapper/swearing characters after about 10 minutes. I prefered the liberty city of GTA4, but I suppose they have to move it somewhere new.

Regardless, I'd like to see something new, not just a new story, but some changes to how the game works. Perhaps integrate NPCs into the world better, better mission structure. I expect we'll see a persistent online character like Red Dead. APB done properly, perhaps...

I don't mind where the next location is, I just want the silly to come back to GTA. The last one was a bit serious business for my liking.

The over-the-top, hyper-real violence and daftness was what made the series for me.

I doubt we'll see this much before 2012, though. Even though they have the engine and a lot of LA assets, GTA's critical path tends to be all the media and voice acting they have to generate. I think Lazlow said that RDR took over a year just to do the voices, newspapers, movies etc. and there's no radio there.

Did you not play the expansions?

As someone pointed out, they've had two extra episodes this time round. It's a different model now. I reckon the change of location and lead time will make a big enough difference to warrant a "V".

Edit: Having said all that, whether it's IV or V or they drop the numerals altogether will be a (probably quite late) marketing decision.

All I care about is R* taking a long, hard look at what made RDR so good and then taking some of those ideas and adapting them into the GTA world... could be amazing if done right.
