I don't think the actual game will be far off these shots tbh. GTAIV was actually a stunning game on consoles, in both actuality and in the build up; it's just no one really appreciated it because it was so "gritty". Clearly, there's been tinkering done, but I fully expect the game to look excellent on 360.

Why is everyone all of a sudden complaining the screenshots are from a PC version? They have been all along surely? :/

The helicopter spotlight screen looks like a PS2 screenshot, so it all evens out :)

It really wasn't, I remember one of the first things I thought when playing 4 was "Damn it's a bit ugly isn't it?". I can't speak for PS3 as I never played that one but 360 had that terrible blurry look that reminded me of an oil painting.

I loved the graphical style of GTA IV and thought it was gorgeous at times.

IV was stunning I thought. I've played all the way through the game plus the episodes on both 360 and PS3 and definitely think the 360 one looks better, the PS3 version looked like it had some sort of polka dot filter over the top. It's not aged well, but at the time it was very lovely.

I was playing the 360 version once, just idly driving a big Range Rover thing around, when a thunderstorm started, the sky clouded over, the colour and vibrancy drained from the world, and Pruit Igoe came on the radio. Despite nothing at all actually happening in the game, it was just an incredibly serene moment where everything suddenly clicked into place. I think I might be talking bollocks, but it just felt right somehow.

I can sort of see what he means. It looks like how you remember the PS2 games looking in your head.

Then you go back and play it and realise it actually looks like this.

It looked lovely at the time, but I've revisited it lately to mop up the things I hadn't done like ramp-jumping and stranger danger missions, and actually it looks pretty average now.

That's still an achievement for something from 2007, but it doesn't look anything like as crisp as the new screenies do.

Seems about right - most other games have got a bit prettier in the intervening years since 2007, but I'd certainly not expect it to run at any more than the 20 - 30fps that IV seemed to maintain on the 360 for the most part.

Not that those things really matter to me to be honest, I'm still going to gorge on the presumed amazing-ness of a new GTA game.

Don't get me wrong on that I'm not saying it didn't look great and it wasn't a great achievement, it did and it was. However it, IMO, was far from stunning really. Like I said one of the first thoughts of playing GTA4 was it was bit ugly and I do remember a bit of dissapointment and at the time others noticed it to as I remember talking of the blurry graphics at the time. It's hard to picture it now after so long but it was a bit rough in places.

I will say, without trying to start format wars, a lot of that criticism disappeared when I got to the PC where the view distance detail is amazing but I'm honestly not pulling the elitist card there I did enjoy it on 360 :)

If you look closely enough, that claim doesn't seem too unbelievable.

na, it's bollox, maybe they were rendered on the respective machines dev boxes but the distant texture detail and lack of jagged lines on objects or shadows makes me think they were rendered at a much higher resolution than either console could manage

one for Digital Foundry to take a look at me thinks

Look at the background in the pic where the guy's standing in front of a car. The plant, bridge, etc. look like crap. Certainly crappier than the supercomputer people think this was actually rendered on would be capable of, imo.

I still think GTA IV holds up pretty well, personally.

Looked fantastic at the time IMO, especially when you consider what the previous gen GTA's looked like.

It could be that I played it initially on an SD telly and now I'm using my iMac screen, so it shows the jaggies and other flaws more. Also, I was sitting closer than I would have back then... But, I do think objectively it hasn't aged too well.
