I have a Creative Zen Vision M MP3 player, which I love. It's got a 30GB HDD, plays most formats of music file happily, does video, has an FM radio, looks pretty nice and has generally done me excellent, especially for the 125 I paid for it.

However today it stopped playing sound on the left. So I only get sound through the right ear of my ear phones. Thinking it was them, I bought a new pair and found to my annoyance they were the same. Not good. So I need a new MP3 player, one that matches the standards above. The Vision M has been discontinued so I can't go for one of them...

So what do you guys suggest?

    Thread

Well scrap this thread. I just tried my MP3 player with a 3rd set of headphones and it works fine. Both my old pair and new pair have a faulty left earpiece.

    What are the chances eh?

Resurrecting this thread for my own purposes. I'm after a higher-end portable music player than my current zen stone. I like its smallness, but the interface is a bit annoying, I'd like to make my own playlists, and I want more storage so I can stick all my music on there.

Given I have a fairly rational dislike of Apple products, what can you recommend? I've no interest in video but I don't mind if it has that capacity as long as it doesn't make it too bulky and heavy.

I can recommend one to avoid, sandisk. Anything at all by them, support is rubbish and they just abandon old players and leave lots of bugs remaining.

/is still bitter his 8gb e280 is a buggy POS

Get a Creative Zen (4 or 8Gb are the best value), and slot in an SD card to boost the capacity. They are excellent players.

This seems like suspiciously reasonable advice. I've been pleased with how well that 40 quid zen stone held up, I've been using it for ages with no problems. I'd buy creative again.
Where's the catch? What are the controls like? Can I make playlists?

I'm getting mine for Xmas but picking it up at the Paris duty free, coming home from Disneyland at the end of October. Hoping they have the Archos ones, but if not it'll be Creative. Avoiding the X-Fi for sure - that's the one with the 9 metal buttons on the front, right? - and possibly getting a Mosaic.

    Bump!

My Creative Zen Sleek has finally died, after much lurching for pretty much the last year. I'm after a simple MP3 player, hopefully up to 20GB - no photo storage, no video, no frills. I have a PSP for that (too big to use that), so really after decent audio playback with WMA support as well.

I've got the new Creative Zen, had it for about 9 months now. It's flash memory, and it's light as owt. Very solid piece of kit, only had to reset it with a paperclip twice after using it every day on the bus.

    Creative Zen 32GB

There are smaller storage models, but you'll get no problems using WMP or the Creative Media Player stuff to upload songs onto it.

Yeah, seen those, cheers. I was reasonably happy with the Sleek, 3 years is a little short though imo. Still, 100 ain't bad.

My Iriver MP3 player battery has given up so I need a new player.

I only want it for music, and good quality sound at that. Around 10Gig would do.

    Any recommendations?

Zen Vision M is still great - I think you can get a refurb one relatively cheap.

I bought a Cowon D2 considering how much people seem to go on about them when the subject of MP3 players comes up. I was actually really pleased with it at first despite it's crappy touch screen interface as the sound quality was excellent, it's really tiny and it has SDHC slot which, unlike the 'new' Zens, is treated as just another part of the library.

Unfortunately this didn't last long as a number of things became obvious; It doesn't support playlists in any way, aside from the one 'dynamic playlist' it has. It is utterly, utterly useless in dealing with ID3 tags to point that it can't even play tracks in the right order. It randomly fails to find album art from most of the albums stored on it. It randomly seems to loose files. And on top of that it gets confused and glitches in various ways if you copy too many files across in one go.

So, although the D2 sounds marginally better, I decided to stick with the Zen Vision M despite it being a bit bulky. I've not tried the new Zens so I can't really say if they match up to the Vision M.

The whole thing about just slotting in an SD card doesn't really work as well as you hope with the Zens, BTW. It doesn't intergrate anything on the card into the main library and it's a bit of a pain to do anything useful with.

Really? That's a bit of a PITA. Even if I had to access the songs separately, and treat it as a different library that would be fine. Really don't know what to go for, prob should have a butchers at some in a shop. Can't move for ipods though half the time.

On a totally different note, I want a really simple, little, cheap MP3 player, as I listen to my portable DAB when I'm oot and aboot, but 10% of the time (on the tube etc.) it doesn't work. I'm tempted by this one:Play.com 8gb flash-based MP3 player at 25, but I'm vaguely aware it's a really bad idea. Can anyone talk me out of it/recommend an alternative by a real company at a similar price?

sansa clip for the cheap small player (http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2007/10/sandisk-sansa-clip-review.php , http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sandisk-Sansa-Player-Radio-Black/dp/B001GCTR3C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1231025049&sr=8-1)

and for a more expensive higher capacity player it's the cowon s9 (http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2008/12/cowon-iaudio-s9-review.php) although the 32 gb version isn't out, or even announced yet but it's supposed to be out in the next month or so.
