Staarrr Fleeeeett, Brian May once sang, and 6 million young children sang along with him. Every Saturday morning.

This was easily the best thing ever on Saturday mornings, featuring a giant mecha that formed by joining three spaceships. And the baddies were space pirates. And the main hero had an afro.

It was so good, they only made eight episodes, edited down out of 25 Japanese original eps.

And it's coming out on DVD this autumn. At last. Muthafuckin' Star Fleet.

    Show some love.

Ten minutes and no replies? For shame, EG, for shame.

Mind you, you'd need to be 30+ to remember the show.

It doubled in awesomeness when the ice cream van started calling just before star fleet started.

    A 99 + Star Fleet = Happy Child

I also particularly like the way it conforms to every anime stereotype in the book, despite it being a puppet show. The trad big strong black guy being a particular favourite.

And the fat, squat, ugly ginger guy.

The baddies were cool. And it was loads better than Terrahawks, which was basically a load of metal balls featuring Windsor Davies and a witch in a wig.

My daughter bought me a set of homemade dvds of this off ebay last christmas, I've been wanting to see it again for years.

Despite the shitty quality of the copy I've got I can't see me rushing to buy it, but I'm glad to hear they're finally releasing it on dvd.

I used to wake my dad up at 7am every saturday morning to watch this (it started at 8, but I liked to be sure).

I'd really like to see a subbed version of the Japanese one, it was the greatest show ever devised.

Captain Makara was one of the most intriguing things i'd ever seen when i was a child. I loved that character's design.

Awesome this is coming to DVD.

    /uber nerd mode
That's Commander Makara and Brian May didn't do the theme tune, he did a cover version of the theme tune. Under the name Brian May and Friends, it also features Eddy Van Halen.

Got my box set of this from Play.com, watched the 1st 3 episodes :D top stuff. Just can't wait until we get to Dia-X opening a can of woop-ass on the Imperial alliance. Just one fault with this set, they don't tell you which disc the extras are located on.

Commander Makara. Could never work out if it was a he or a she.

Fave character was definitely the fucked up ape / monkey giant wookie type thing that used to knock around with the princess..

I liked her weird little sidekick.

    "By your divine guidance!"

(always sounded like he meant to follow it up with a muttered "you fucking bitch" under his breath).

Awesome ship designs in this though. X-Bomber vs giant Scarab-like thing and weird tattered sailing ship in space.

Would mentioning Terrahawks in this thread be tantamount to treason btw?

I always wanted to do a phantom edit on Star Fleet and trim out all the crap, clips episodes and recaps and streamline it down to about 2 or 3 hours.
