from rockpapershotgunStarcraft 2 gets some competition! I really enjoyed Dawn of War even if the expansions milked it dry, I like the sound of a 40k game on a shiney new engine with Tyranids and Genestealers an maybe some titans
Scans of the next month page of the new issue of PC Gamer (UK!) have been circling the the electric-internet gossip-tree. It looks this.
Terminator armour or standard Mark VIII? It's so hard to tell with these modern hair-cuts.
Other than that, we’re pretty much left with speculation until April 10th. What are the races? Will one finally be the Tyranids? Will it share more in common with Company of Heroes than trad Dawn of War? How will it compare to Starcraft 2? All will, clearly, be revealed but until then: Speculation Comment Thread Engine go!

Registered 6 years agoThis link further provides clarification that is indeed a Warhammer related thing. That, and adding 'dawn' to the title... if it isn't Dawn of War 2, the person who named it that is in for a beating.
Anyway yes, hopefully it will be good - have a decent, scripted campaign instead of a bunch of glorified skirmishes, start with about 6 races including the Tyranids, have some work put in and something cool like have you be able to choose which Chaos God to follow and thus have Nurgle, Khorne, Slaanesh, or Tzeentch specific units (Chaos undivided can get lost) and similar stuff for other races. It's entirely doable for the Essence engine, which has 'doctrines.' -

Registered 10 years agoHopefully this is a new engine and we'll get Tyranids and the like. According to an interview i heard the old engine couldn't do justice to the Tyranids so they left them out.

Yeah, same here. Even if they just took they learnings they seem to have made in CoH it would be a much better game.

Registered 10 years agoLooks lovely. I hope they introduce or tweak some of the CoH mechanics like cover-seeking, variable armour-thickness and junk for this. Rather than just being a graphical overhaul and a new race or two. -

Registered 6 years agoFuck yeah. Shame it isn't going to be out around Christmas this year, but oh well.
I definitely don't think it will be better than Starcraft II (and I'm not even a fan of the original Starcraft) but for micromanagement-incompetent people like myself it should be a great alternative.
And co-op campaign sounds great. I just really, really hope it's a good, scripted one instead of "play skirmish X amount of times and receive 1 cutscene at the end, if you're lucky" -

A few of those details in the link are...intriguing. Limited squads, squads being more individual and valuable, no cannon-fodder stuff. Good to hear they're going for some new ideas. Have to wait and see how such dynamics actually play out and feel.
No mention of vehicles besides the Dreadnoughts and no air or sea units. Stomping sounds good.
That bugged the hell out of me in DoW, especially after CoH - MASSIVE tanks, that can't just drive over a squad of Gretchin, and get stuck surrounded by infantry. Insult added to injury when the Imperial Guard acknowledgement voice says "Run 'em over!". -
Nice. Been crossing my fingures for a second DoW ever since i finished the first.
Thinking about it, i got a free night tonight. May fire the old boy back up again. -

Be careful though.Quoted

The small squad control and reward system suggests that they're will be a pretty decent RPG element to it. Would be grand if that was continued in a co-op campaign with players specialising in certain fields. I'm thinking WiC mixed with CoH and Warcraft's hero features. Anyway, it's something different.

Registered 6 years agoThe graphics still look fine. People still play Starcraft ffs...
I hope they have only 4 races in - Space Marines, Orks, Chaos, Tyranids (maybe Eldar as well, but I hate them). And detail them, a lot. So for instance Chaos have a bunch of God-specific units from Khorne, Nurgle, Tzeentch and Slaanesh and you can choose at the start which God you want to follow, or be Chaos undivided and be able to use all but be heavily limited.
The other option is to go nuts and have all the current races + a few more such as Tyranids. But I have a sneaking suspicion it'll be neither, and they'll not only have only a few races, but not detail them much either.
Edit: I posted a very similar post earlier on. Oops. -

Registered 6 years agoYeah but what's the point in making an entirely new game if it doesn't even improve on the previous one? There's a ridiculous amount of other things they could milk you for in the 40k universe. The recent expansion, Soulstorm, is an absolute joke with very little work put into it, but people will still gobble it up and give them money. -

To be fair, upgrading to the Essence Engine alone is by its very definition improvement.
