Anyone see the first episode of "Mad Men" on BBC4? 10pm Sundays, Freeview 9.

By the same writers as "The Sopranos" apparently (which I've never watched as I don't like mafia/gangster stories).
It's about the advertising men at Madison Advertising and set in the 50s I think. Anyway, it was fantastic! Brilliantly written with properly fleshed out characters and everything! I can't wait to see the rest of it.

Yeah, I watched it. Being a big Sopranos fan I felt I had to.

It was pretty good. I'm already starting to take an interest in the characters, which isn't bad going for a first episode. Shows a lot of potential.

Watched first ep of this a few months ago and I loved the style but wasn't really grabbed by the story having spent the previous few months on a diet of Dexter, The Shield, 24, Lost, Heroes and Weeds. I did like it, though, but not enough to need to see the next ep. It's a bit barren in TV land at the moment though so I might get back into it.

Started to watch this after The Wire had finished.. seems ok.. like Eddie said, i haven't been immediately grabbed by it.. but i do like the style, and it seems the story could get interesting so ill keep on watching.

Is the main lad called Richard Nixon? Did i hear that right?

Entertaining but not quite compelling enough to make me watch it regularly but if i catch it i can see myself watching.

Loved the first episode, not seen the 2nd yet. Sharp, well acted and engaging from the off.

TTV - you misheard mate. That was a phone call basically saying that if they could sell Dick Nixon, they could sell anyone! Obviously, they did, becoming President and all....

Noticed an episode was on BBC2 last night. Anyone still watching around here?

I went ahead and downloaded the 1st season and watched it. Really enjoyed, got much better as the characters developed throughout. Nicely paced too

I'm still watching it. Well written and performed though can see why some might find it a bit boring.

Personally enjoying watching it though it is a tough watch for those of us (i.e. me in particular) who have quit smoking recently as EVERY BLOODY SCENE has people chain-smoking in it.

After talking to my mum, who worked in an office in the early 1960s, apparently smoking was just as prevalent as shown in Mad Men.

My dad, who has never smoked, says that back then you were treated as a oddball if you didn't smoke when out socially (kind of like smokers are treated now I would ironically imagine)

I listen to Antioch retro radio via iTunes almost every night. It's a collection of antique radio shows, family, drama, comedy, from the 30s, 40s and 50s. Anyway, a lot of the adverts are still there and it basically Kraft Food Products and fags. The cigarette ads are all about the quality of the tobacco and how it puts a skip in your step and feature chorus lines singing the cheesy slogans. Great stuff. :)

I keep watching the season one finale over and over, it's so fantastic. Also watching the second series but it's harder to watch it week after week than marathon sessions.

I really enjoyed season 1 (still waiting for 2 to start), but half way through I felt that there was something missing. At the time I wasn't sure what it was until afterwards but I think the almost total lack of violence throughout the series felt a little alien to my mind.

Maybe its the Sopranos feel of it that makes me expect someone to get shot at any point but it took some time for me to come to terms with it.

In the end I think it says more about me and my expectations of the show that it does about the show itself. Its also a credit to the show that it can be that good without needing violence to add the drama. In fact its hugely refreshing.

Probably will be. Broadcast in the states in HD. Pity it got pushed off BBC2 for BBC4.

I've come to realise that women were sexy in that decade. Drapers new secretary is soo hot.

January Jones (Don's wife) can't be her real name surely? It's so porn star!

    She's damned hot though :)

    Ah Bets..pure sex!

Regarding violence..Don punched someone in the last episode I watched.

For those waiting for BBC to show them..can I ask why? Espiecially when they are so freely available online.

Edit: Oh i think it was shown on BBC4 first, then BBC 2.. maybe theyll do the same again

Me too. Prefer to watch stuff at my own pace (i.e. in a marathon session over a weekend!).

Luckily amazon are doing the first season boxset for 13 quid which seems like a bit of a bargain.
