Well if said proof-of-concept develops into something worth pursuing, I'll probably end up using Premiere or Final Cut Pro, it's just I wanted a quick and easy way to knock my trial together.

Install Linux in a VM and use Pitivi or a different editor which will be available from the package manager.

Or install Windows in a VM and try the free version of Lightworks.

I could just boot into Windows using Bootcamp and use Windows Movie Maker I suppose.

Final Cut is now, basically, iMovie Pro, which is why iMovie is such a bargain. Its really powerful.

iMovie is listed under "built-in apps" for e.g. the new iMac, so it seems it should be included?

Well I clicked on spotlight and did a search and it came back empty handed. I then figured it would be a free download but was surprised to find it costs a tenner.

Anyone had any experience with the current range of iMac's? Thinking of getting one in the next few months but I'm a little paranoid when it comes to anything Apple now a days as there will probably be a superior model released the week after purchase...

So might it be worth waiting for something new to come along or are they worth a punt now?

If it's just for creating a quick concept you could use the Final Cut Pro trial for 30 days, unless you need it longer term.

So it shipped with Lion, which iLife is a part of. Unless you somehow deleted it? Like Crispy said check your App store purchase history. Or else contact Apple and ask them why?

Do you have iPhoto and Garageband?

I just noticed that Reeder for Mac and the iPad is free now. I've been using these as my main feed readers and been really happy with them (minus the impending Google Reader shutdown):

I had to reinstall mac recently, hadn't been using Time Machine and therefore lost everything. I still have all my music on my iPod and iPhone. The only way to get that music off, as far as I can tell (bar the infuriatingly shit third party shareware apps), is to sync with my macbook. If I do that does it sync with the macbook (as in delete all my device music so that it matches up with my macbook) or will it pull across the music?

Ah, that's annoying. Time Machine is your friend.

When you connect a new device, it'll give you two options: "configure as new" and "restore from backup". Maybe not the 2nd one in your case, since it'll have no backups. I'm unable to check ATM, but the "configure as new" option should not delete your stuff from the device. This is Apple, though, so maybe you should wait for someone else come by with definite confirmation before you go connecting stuff.

Thanks :) Too late though, all wiped and reconfigured. I'll be using Time Machine from now on! Now I just want my music back but don't want to sync devices in iTunes if it'll delete the music!

Is there anything to be aware of before buying Apple Care from a third party? My macbook is almost a year old and Cex is much cheaper than Apple or Amazon.

Can you actually do that? I thought you basically had to register Applecare more or less at the time of purchase.

AFAIK you can buy it at any time within the first year. That's why I waited.

You can do it any time in the first year but it doesnt give you any extra time cumulatively, so if you register it on day 364, you still have the same three years as if you had registered it on day 1.

It actually catches a lot of people out. They literally buy applecare, get the box and thats that. The machine then dies after 18 months and, hey presto, no applecare because they didnt register the product.

I bought Applecare with my new iMac. As far as I know, that's my iMac covered with Applecare. You saying I have to go online and register the Applecare as well, or is that just for people that buy the Applecare much later as a separate purchase?

Even then, I thought you had to state what product you were purchasing the Applecare for at the time of purchase of the Applecare, because it's priced differently per type of device. No?

Is anybody here any good at deciphering kernel panic log reports? I've got an early 2011 MBP that hasn't caused me much trouble since I bought it in that year, but I've had two kernel panics in the last couple of days.

The only things I can think of that I installed soon before the first panic are 1) an update to Java, which borked PS3 Media Server until 2) I installed a daily build of that program which was a hurried fix for the problem caused by the Java update. Is it reasonable to presume it's the not-sufficiently-tested build of PS3 Media Server that's causing it, or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

I'll post the two logs here if anyone thinks they'll be able to decipher them, but I'm not sure if there's any point.

Anyone ever used IMCapture to record Facetime conversations?

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

I'm trying to edit my hosts file on the work Macbook, running 0SX 10.8.3, but it won't let me. I can edit and save a duplicate, but not the original. Which is proving very annoying.
Any idea how I can remedy this?
