    Ok. I've got the old black screen of death. However, I have a mouse connected and that normally flashes a red light when it boots up. Also when I press the Caps Lock key there is no light. So it looks as though there's something more than just power not getting to the screen.

    Been trying the usual key-presses but if there's no power to the keyboard, it won't do anything. But the light on the front is on.

    Old 17 inch MacBook Pro. I could try and get it fixed I suppose. Or go for new shiny shiny.

    All photos and iTunes stored on external drive, so no lost anything.

    Does it chime on start-up?
    Have you tried holding down CMD, ALT, P and R to reset the PRAM on start-up?
    Maybe try an external keyboard if you have one if and seems USB is getting power?
    Could try reseating RAM too.

    No chime. No power to USB. Normally if it's the usual black screen, the light on Caps Lock will come on. None of that.

    Been trying all the usual stuff. Nothing. Even though I suspect none of the usual stuff will work if no power really isn't coming to the keyboard.

    Everything important on external HD. Had the machine for 6 years. May be time for the all new MacBook Pro.

    And before anyone states the obvious...No I do not want a fucking PC! :)

    You could maybe try to reset the SMC by removing the battery (if possible), shut down and hold the power button for 5 secs?

    I've done all of the possible fixes apart from removing the battery. I'll keep trying over the next few days.

    Anyone here use an iMac? I didn't take my MBP with me anywhere and I doubt that would change this time around.

    In terms of value for money (for Apple), I can get so much more out of one.

    You pay a premium for the laptop form factor. You'll get more bang for your buck with an iMac compared to any of Apple's laptop range. Assuming, of course, you don't ever need to move the thing around.

    The current iMacs are great imo. Good enough performance for 95% of users, a fantastic screen (and don't underestimate the benefits of a big screen over a pokey 15" job), good speakers and decent-ish memory and storage options.

    I'd go for one of those over a MacBook / MacBook Pro every day of the year if I wasn't in the market for a portable.

    We just got a new imac, it's great. The price goes up pretty quick once you upgrade the cpu and the ram to 16gb which is pretty much essential on the 21" we bought. HD is noticeably slower than the SSD on the MBP though

    Yeah, read reviews saying that an SSD is pretty much essential as the fusion drive isn't that great.

    Yeah, I'm working on a 2013 iMac and the hard drive is a bit painful at times now that I'm used to SSD. 16GB means that it isn't too awful once I've got everything open though. Having a good, colourful high density screen is a massive help for video editing, even without Retina resolution. Had to provide my own mouse though.

    It's not that bad, if I hadn't been using an SSD for the last few years I doubt I'd notice. I don't do any video editing or anything HD intensive so it's a non issue for me

    I have a 27" 5k iMac, the first gen one from late 2014. I don't need a computer to be portable, I either need a computer at work or at home and my phone is sufficient for in-between.

    It was pricey but so worth it. It still boots up from cold in seconds too, which is a revelation to me as my first Mac.

    Yeah. I'm going to go for the 21.5 inch one with the beefier processor, 32G and a 1TB SSD.

    Will come in handy for 4K video editing.

    Edit: Going to the Apple store later to take a closer look.

    @beastmaster

    Bear in mind that the cheapest 21" iMac doesn't have a Retina display. Some people don't care, but I wouldn't go back to the older, lower res screens.

    @Jeepers

    Just checked.

    "21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display"

    That'll do for me!

    @beastmaster

    Nice one.

    If you do go to the Apple store, don't even look at the 27". You'll be a few hundred quid worse off if you do :)

    Edit: And others have said, I'd strongly recommend upgrading to 16gig of RAM.

    Go for the 5k 27" it's beautiful!!!
    The only thing is that every time I work on a 1080p screen I think there's something wrong with my eyes for a bit:)

    One advantage of the Retina ones is the scaled display - if your eyesight is good you can scale everything down so you'd have the equivalent of (say) a 1440p display on that 21" display (though I've not done it on the 4k iMac so you might need a program to force that level of scaling). Go into the display options to check that out; 1440 is great for editing 1080 video.

    Also get the trackpad as your free input device, the mouse isn't very good!

    Ended up with a 21.5 inch with the i7 processor, 32G of RAM, 1TB SSD and Trackpad.

    That should keep me going for a long time to come. Should get it towards the end of next week but Apple always give out dates and ship earlier than expected.

    I finally pulled the plug on a 23" MacbookPRO sans ScamBar but with upgraded processor and RAM. Figured it will have to last me at least five years so I better opt for the slightly more powerful PRO as opposed to the tempting MacBook Norm.

    Will take a couple of weeks before I get it since I'm such a special little snowflake that has to order outside the Plat du Jour.

    Bit odd not to just get the better laptop, despite the touch bar. If it was optional I doubt I'd ever select it, but I wouldn't not buy one because of it

    I think itís more expensive. Also I can see issues if you use bootcamp.
