    Hi-hey,

I'm applying for a scholarship to work as a language teaching assistant in the UK/Eire and was looking for advice on which places I should pick as my first choices, as I have no idea where I'd rather go and, to be honest, don't know much about some of the places.

I'd like a place not far of a considerably-sized city (better if it has nice communications) and most importantly, that makes you feel welcome... I've been told Scotland, Ireland and Wales would be good choices but here's the full list:

    01 South West.
    02 South Central.
    10 Midlands.
    03 Sussex.
    04 Surrey.
    12 Wales.
    06 Greater London.
    05 Kent.
    13 North West Midlands.
    09 South Midlands.
    11 South West Midlands.
    14 East Anglia.
    20 Scotland.
    07 Essex.
    08 Hertfordshire.
    15 North East Midlands.
    16 Yorkshire.
    19 North East.
    17 Lancashire, Mersey-
    side, Isle of Man.
    18 Cumbria.
    21 Northern Ireland.
    Ireland

Any suggestions? Thanks a lot in advance :)

Glasgow seems to be a popular choice for language students at the moment.

They're probably here teaching us English :)

I’m a big fan of the South West myself, has a nice balance between being urban (in places like Bristol) and still nice and countrified, and you’re not far from the beach.

Northern Ireland isn't that violent anymore.

Northern places are quite nice. Lots of urban, lots of not urban, lots of cold, lots of beer. If you're a language student, it's the motherload just 'cos you can see how the language twists over quite a short distance...

    I'm a grumpy bastard.

Bristol is a fucking lovely place. Went to Uni there. A mini London, but friendly.

Oxford looks good on the CV and the schools are pretty good around here.

In the end I chose the Scotland, Kent and Wales areas as my first 3 choices. I'll let you know when/if they pick me. Thanks for the advices ;)

Scotland and Wales is a very vague choice. Not being patronising but do you realise that Scotland and Wales are countries and have many towns and cities within them? Some parts are nice, some are awful.

If you definitely want urban then Greater London is the only area that's guaranteed. Everywhere else could be urban or very rural.

Yorkshire's nice. Has some good cities and some lovely countryside. Scotland could be great or awful depending on whether you end up in Glasgow or Edinburgh or out in the middle of nowhere. Stay the hell away from the Midlands and East Anglia.
