I used to play a bit of LotR: BFME, and I also like a bit of Total War. What are the best fantasy strategy games, apart from Dawn of War? Failing that, RPGs will do.

Have you tried the Spellforce games? Spellforce 2 in particular was sweet.

Failing that Baldur's Gate II for the win.

Some of the "Might and Magic" series are supposedly worth a go but i've never played any so couldn't direct you to them sorry.

    There's also:

    Icewind Dale?
    Dungeon Siege?
    Titan Quest?

but they're mainly single character games though.

    RPGs:
    Planescape Torment.
    Fallout 1& 2.
    Planescape Torment.
    Planescape Torment.
    Morrowind.

I'll think of some others in a minute. :)

If you aren't bothered by grafix then Baldur's Gate II, Icewind Dale 2, Planescape: Torment and fallout 1 and 2 are all RPGs worth looking up. Might be a little hard to locate, mind, but eBay is your friend.

Neverwinter Nights 1 was decidedly average but there were some amazing mods put together for it.

Warcraft 3 is pretty good too. Though you must've played that by now. Everyone has.

I still can't find many Fantasy Strategy/Tactics/RTS type games on the PC, most of them are WWII or future themed unfortunately.

I haven't! Never got round to it. I fancy something strategy-flavoured with Orcs in, so I might give it a go.

The Heroes of Might and Magic series is pretty good. Turn-based rather than real time, but enjoyable never-the-less.

Oh and Knights of the Old Republic (and KotOR II if you have the time). It's a straight RPG but I can't recommend enough to fans of the genre. Once you've played them you may join the 'where the hell is KotOR III?' club.

If you have a DS, I hear that Final Fantasy XIIIIWhatever: Revenant Wings is quite a good mix of fantasy/RPG.

    Pretty good freeform RPG.
    Is that the steampunk one?
If so it's a bit rough around the edges but well worth tracking down.

Starcraft > all - but it is a bit dated now.

Warcraft 3 is great, and has a smidge of rp thrown into the mix too, it's more about skirmishing thatn turtle/overwhelm tactics.

I know you say fanstasy but world in conflict and company of heroes are some of the best RTS of the last few years, don't dismiss 'em!

The Heroes of Might and Magic series are great RPG/strategy games.

The latest one, HOMM5, was great despite it's poor reviews.

RPGs have been covered, I think. Note that if you start with Planescape Torment it will make all the others look a bit crap. It's in a league of its own.

In terms of strategy games, if you like Advance Wars you should try one of the games I pimp regularly - Battle for Wesnoth. It's a fantasy turn based strategy game similar in some regards to Advance Wars. It's very good and completely free, so obviously worth a try.

You should also try the Heroes of Might and Magic games especially the third one, (the best) and the fifth one (the newest, which is not bad either).

I'd agree about the Witcher. It's the best RPG I've played in ages - despite some dodgy voice acting and dialogue. Looks lovely with all the detail maxed out too.

Another vote for the SpellForce games here. Personally I prefered the first one, but both are good.

Are you saying the Mass Effect universe is as good as the Star Wars universe? At least to me, the thing that drew me to KOTOR was the Star Wars license.

Haven't tried Mass Effect though, but the battle system really seems something I won't enjoy.
