Hasn't been a decent one since M1 Tank Platoon.

I think there's one in development at the moment though, Steel Fury or something.

Arma is not a fun game to play. Too buggy, too awkward.

Absolutely, M1 Tank Platoon 2 was just incredible. Microprose really did know how to do a sim right.

Being in a fully crewed tank in Op Flashpoint was pretty fucking awesome, apart from ENEMY! SOLDIER! 3 O'CLOCK! MAN! 1O'CLOCK! SOLDIER! 2 O'CLOCK! constantly blaring out at you.

Heh... and only after about 6 of those do they politely point out "ENEMY! BIG F#CKOFF TANK! 6 O'CLOCK"

Screw World War II. I want to drive and battle against Merkavas, Challengers, and Abrams! I hope Call of Duty manages to implement modern tanks and make it work well, someday.

For those of you after WWII tanking, WWII online ( www.wwiionline.com ) has the most detailed and realistic* tank combat I know of. But its a MMOG (like planetside), and only covers the western front. And doesn't look all that great. But the physics engine would make a great basis for a tank combat sim. I'm fairly sure you can download the game engine and get a feel for it offline if you're interested. And there's usually a free trial of some sort on offer. Been a while since I played, however. (Not enough time.)

*often, this amounts to a more time spent driving and hiding and waiting than actually in action. So not everyones cup of tea.
Also, you can't man more than one crew position at once. That is to say, you cant steer your tank while aiming the gun at the same time.

I've always been really surprised at the lack of proper WWII tank sims, considering the number of WWII FPSs, flight sims, sub sims, RTSs and so on.
I'm assuming there are no WWII mods for modern tank sims such as steel beasts?

    +1 for M1TP2

Having to spot adjust your shells using the map 'cos your tracks had been busted (again) was a proper skill.

I have fond memories of Panzer Elite from a few years ago as well. The quick mission challenges were great fun- backing a Tiger through a church wall and powering down as you waited for the next wave to attack was gripping stuff. Pretty soon you were convinced *all* boxy hedges were actually a Sherman sneaking up on you...

ArmA patched up to the 1.09 beta patch and on a very powerfull machine is good fun, armoured assaults at night make for some entertaining battles.
  • Deleted user 21 January 2008 12:25:24
I found that Iron Warriors - T72 game cheap over the weekend. It promised to be Silent Hunter, only in a tank.

    It's not. It's arse.

When is this patch coming out proper? Or shall I just get the beta and play on a decent server?

get the beta, it sits along side 1.08 so you wont have to do a reinstall when the finished patch is released

and yes, you need a beast of a server to run arma as the bullet trajectories kill the cpu and max the bandwidth

We really could use a good solid tank sim.

I've been playing BF2+Exps & BF2142 (yes I know, not a tank sim as such) and it's online.
    It does have single player.

Pitting yourself against other human players is great fun. The GFX are pretty good and if you get one with your mates, you can create a squad and apply some tactics.
There are some idiots that spoil it every now & then and it does get somewhat manic lol

But you could rent your own multiplay server, get ya mates on and play proper with loads of maps (or just join an existing server)

The exp pack 'armoured fury' for BF2 is tank orientated with suitable maps for tank battles and with all the BF series, you can play up to 64 players.
Again not the serious tank sim that your looking for but still great fun.

    http://www.lighthouse-interactive.com/Steel-Fury

Steel Fury, its still a bit rough around the edges, but can be teh awesome!1!!!, sitting in the commanders cupola, you and a couple of platoons of tanks and infantry rolling forward under artillery bombardment. Visually incredible. This game has a lot of potential.

Silent Hunter in a tank? You mean, live size? That must have turned out to be a huge disappointment.
From what I read, T-72 is a pretty decent tank simulator, still supported, patched, modded etc. Reportedly sytem requirements used to be insane, but it was couple of years ago.
