Yup, Opposing Fronts is great. Top campaign(s), just like in the original - maybe a bit easier, though.
    Worth a try possibly.

It also works as a standalone game, btw., in case you aren't sure if he has the original.

Europa Universalis 3 - greatest strategy game ever. If he prefers WW2 go for Hearts of Iron 2. Tho if he doesn't like anything complicated I wouldn't go near either.

Aside from that, then I second Company of Heroes and also recommend World in Conflict if you want a RTS.

Bump for my own Dad. He's a military buff and almost exclusively plays strategy titles. I've got him the Medieval II expansion and I'm going to try to get him into Civ again with Civ IV (for some inexplicable reason, he didn't get on with Civ III when I gave it to him a few years back), so that angle is covered. I'd like to expand his horizons a little and see if he will take to an FPS, but I'm really concerned that he won't be able to keep up with the frantic pace of most modern titles and won't enjoy it.

CoD2 seems like a good "in" because of the subject matter, but I haven't played it to know if the easy mode is easy enough or if it has a nice learning curve rather than an Omaha Beach style beginning. Any insights or other recommendations for a military FPS that won't scare my Dad?

I got him the first Space Rangers, which he liked, is the new one much of a development?
  • Deleted user 10 June 2008 17:26:01
Err, depends. If you got him the original, you may have actually got him the second one. They did some odd rebranding in places, and as far as I'm aware the original wasn't released standalone in the UK (presuming that's where you are) so it was first released as Space Rangers 2 (including the first game on the disc), then later just as Space Rangers.

But anyway, it's comparable to the difference between Civ games...basically the same thing but more refined.

Failing that, World in Conflict is decent.
