One of the worst arguments I ever had at uni, in terms of facedesk moments, was about fox hunting. Some idiot at a party (not me!!!!) was getting right het up about it being banned, and they asked what I thought. I said I didn't like fox hunting, and gave a few reasons. The retort was 'yeah but you're from the city'. Nope, country born and bred.

Not that whatfruit is like that, it just reminded me.

That person also then said feminism was rubbish because men and women are different.

    ...
Sounds like the kind of person who isn't directly affected by the issue at hand but has to feel personally aggrieved. Also applies to people upset about immigrants coming in but live in areas where it's spot the brown face.

Of course Dave could be a serial killer in training, but you get the point.
Well, either way you are taking the life of something that would probably prefer to live all things considered. There are probably ways to solve a fox problem without killing them (like, say, capturing them), but I assume that people don't do that because it would be too hard/expensive/whatever.

So, you kill them, because it's cheaper that way. There's a logical kind of calculus going on there, but nothing about it is "humane". We just don't value (most) animal lives as much as we do our own.

True but fruitlivesagain is right, as much as I find fox hunting abhorrent, it doesn’t mean the exterminator can’t do things the right way either.
Yes, absolutely, but regardless of the method the moral problem remains. Even if Dave is killing the foxes in a horrible way he isn't putting on his gladrags, having a laugh with his chums and claiming he is part of some noble tradition.

Unless he is a really flamboyant fox-killer.

I'll admit I don't know, so as you've said you're form a rural background, how do fox exterminators (not hunts) kill them?
If you know where the fox is you can attack its den. You set traps and snare at exits and throw smoke grenades into its den. The foxes try to escape and get caught in the traps.

If you only have one or two foxes you might shoot them with the rifle or if your doing it on the cheap you'll give them both barrels of a shotgun.

If you are protecting an area of fenced off land you bait purpose made holes with fence snares. You check the snare and give shoot it.

If you bait a number of cages or a big trap you take the cage to a chamber and gas the buggers all at once.

I agree inhumane is inhumane I just balk at the idea that one is so much more acceptable than the other. The end result is the same the fox is murdered and spends its last moments in abject terror.

I go back to catching, sedating properly and then dispatching while it’s unconscious and has no idea. Why not do it that way?

Because its expensive. We do not use sedatives for the animals we slaughter and eat why would use one for a pest.

A professional exterminator to do the above is costly for a landowner hence why they'll try and do it themselves.

I don't buy the cost argument, if, as you suggest, there are lots of people employed or paid to assist in what is, ultimately, an expression of a particular culture and its traditions. The fox is almost immaterial to my mind: I am sure that's totally alien to huntspeople, but it's how it strikes me as a detached observer.

So the cost of the regalia, horse, equipment, catering, tents etc... wouldn’t cover it? Practicality vs the want for blood and ridiculousness?

So if they could replace the foxes with rural unemployed people on benefits. they could keep the country Tories happy? You could do one hunt a year to qualify for your Benefits pittance. Sorry. package.

@Ingram85 IN running a hunt you are generating money from payments of those who do not own the land. In the other you are not.

I'm astonished it hasn't already been floated in a Sun editorial.

So Hawaii just sent out a mass scale warning of an impending missile strike to all of its residents by accident. Scrolled across the screen just as the football hit half time too.

In a bit of good news, the guy responsible for the Kansas swatting death in December has been charged with manslaughter.

Obviously it's small consolation for the victim's family though. :/
