I quite enjoy Star Trek, but if that sort of thing is involved in being a true fan, I think I'll pass and watch a soap. No-one into that sort of thing on those. Then I'll watch some classic Animal Hospital, followed by some of Gary Glitter's greatest hits. Wholesome family entertainment for all.

Seriously, is everyone that's ever been on TV into that sort of thing? It's a bit disturbing.

In a perverse way, there's more dignity to it than dying in a retirement house whilst shitting in a colostomy bag. Not many centenarians get to go out with a bang.
So... good for him, I guess.

There's an article on Yahoo about Brian Cox and time travel that got me thinking (oh crap, Yahoo article makes someone think!), haven't we been doing it since we got on the back of an horse? Getting from A - B faster than your legs can carry you is a form of time travel isn't it? I mean, if you walk/run from your position to a distance of say 100 miles away then that'll probably take you a few days, but jump on a horse (which lets face it, is the first wet time travel machine) or on/in any other vehicle then you'll arrive at your destination a lot quicker.

Now tell me I'm wrong! :D

Technically, by jumping on the horse, you are time travelling as gravity affects time the further away you are from earth, so if you spent your life on a tall horse, you would be slightly younger than if you had spent it on the ground.

So, by complete accident, he is kind of right.

Doesn't relativity or something also mean time will pass differently when you speed along on a horse, relative to someone walking? An insanely slight difference, but a difference none the less.
  • Deleted user 11 September 2013 15:09:39
You're not travelling in time, though. You're travelling relative to time as it is to someone stationary on Earth. Plus you'll be talking something like travelling relative to time as a fraction of a fraction of a fraction. I could work out the maths, but I'm just going to do a random guesstimate and say it would make 0.1x10^-1000s difference, which would eventually be offset by the fact that everything averages out due to differing altitudes. So jumping on a horse at an altitude of 100ft would probably be the same as just being at 105ft.
