Guess New York isn't so safe even with security to the max. Maybe that will open a few eyes.

The incident does not appear to be terror-related, police said.

It was because DICE released game art as a bonus for BF3 Premium members.

It was a white "gunman" not a foreign "terrorist".

@fletch7100 That is fairly amazing. They just have no fire discipline at all. One shot goes off and they all start blazing away. I guess you have adrenaline involved in such situations but itís difficult to see how the police could feel that threatened in that situation given how many of them there were and that guy only had a knife. Seemed like the exact situation tasers were designed for.

That really is scary. Do many cops not bother with tasers or are few of them equipped with one? At least maybe put one in his leg instead of throwing 30 rounds into someone.

Or just kneecap them or something. If he had a gun I'd kinda understand but he was hardly any kind of threat to them.

That's fucking mental! Taser? Shotgun bean bag rounds? Nah, unload on the bloke.

@BillMurray No idea really. It probably varies between police department knowing the US. A gun would certainly be closer to hand I would think though as they obviously carry them but would probably have to retrieve a Taser from the car.

Anyway crazy guy who is no threat to you because you have a gun but will not act reasonably is the ideal situation for a Taser.

Sounds like the Empire State Building guy was an employee who had been recently fired.

If they have tasers, they carry them on their belt. There would be no sense whatsoever in having to go get it from the car.

I imagine the cops on the scene expressing their incredulity at victims being in terror at the situation.... "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING? IT'S A WHITE GUY. IT'S OK, HE'S JUST GOT A BIT SHOOTY, NOTHING TO BE SCARED OF"

Goddamn it guys. A terror attack is one that is specifically designed to terrorise people with a political or religious agenda motivating the attack. There's no relation to skin colour whatsoever.

If reports are true that this is a disgruntled former employee who decided to stick it to "the man" by killing as many innocent people as possible, how is that different from a "terror" attack. Is that not an (admittedly petty) political motivation?

    Well that's me convinced. O_o

It's a sliding scale from WTC through Oklahoma through Aurora through to this. "Terror-related" is a dog whistle, pure and simple.

Terror-related can be a dog whistle, but it's also a (linguistically not very useful) way of referencing explicitly politicised attacks - I kill you because you occupy **** etc.

'Terror' is a terrible word to use for it, as guns=terror in my head - any gun.

Yes, that's part of my point.

McVeigh was referred to as a "domestic terrorist" in 1995 for railing against the 'establishment' ie. federal government. James Holmes, as far as I've read, hasn't been cited as a terrorist, He's "mentally ill" apparently in 2012 - not "terror-related" despite the word being that he was railing against 'the establishment' treating him unfairly ie. his university and academia at large. It's not hard to jump to the conclusion that "terror-related" is a word reserved in the US media for muslims now, post-911.

It feels churlish to argue about this to be honest, I'll stop splitting hairs.

Yeah, since 2001 it has, of course, taken on that unfortunate baggage.

I'm wondering when the term 'dog whistle' became part of the lexicon. I follow US politics and media closely and only began to see it appear with great regularity early summer this year.

Anyway, terrorism and 'argh! terrorism!!!" are two different things. One is a defined word and the other is a part of a headline.
