    Hello y'all

I am about to head to friend's place this weekend with my trusty PC and we're going to have some old school LAN gaming. Yes, there's only two of us.

We have couple of games that we like but it'd be nice to know some new games that are fun when played together so we can pop to the store before our party begins.

Co-op games are something we really enjoy, but anything goes as long as it works with a two player setup (ie. no bad deathmatch games that need 16 people).

    Thanks, spongey.

ps. Brownie points for new games since those are easier to track down from a games store.

    Sim: Silent Hunter 4
    RPG: Titan Quest
    RTS: World in Conflict
    FPS: Rainbow 6: Vegas, GRAW2

In addition, UT3 is great for deathmatch duels and Medieval 2 is great 1v1.

Titan Quest sounds good. Some nice FPS would be sweet, so UT3 might be a choice. It's so sad there's not enough co-op games, or games suited for 2 players in any form on PC.

Dawn of War or Company of Heroes.. set you and your mate up on one team against some decent AI players and it's great.

As powerup pointed out, you can play pretty much every strategy game in coop against the AI, for example. Not to forget Neverwinter Nights (2), the already mentioned Titan Quest, Swat 4, Rainbow 6: Vegas (I think), or Gears of War.

SWAT 4, SWAT 4 and SWAT 4. Both Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighters have coop now and the old one is pretty good since it has been patched up. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Doom 3 has a coop mod out for it I think, Baldurs Gate 2 but I could never get the online to work in that, Lego Star Wars (might not be LAN but two people on one screen) and Raven Shield has coop but the AI sucks.

I guess you could also work together in something like Civilization 4, you can also get the original Hidden and Dangerous free to download now and I seem to remember that having coop.

    Operation Flashpoint

Create your own map with a full scale tank battle staged, add a few enemy AA units. Set up a few chopper spawns for you and your mate, both get in the same one. Go tank hunting.

You could also set up a few outposts that you can make your way to if downed. Tearing through the hot zone in a jeep with your mate on the MG to get back to the chopper base. There's also a way to give you unlimited spawns.

Alternately, get hold of the Capture the Island mod. It adds an RTS element to the game, you get to command a squad each. The aim is to capture towns from the resistance or any the enemy have captured. You get income from holding towns in order to buy the big toys. AI controls all the other squads.

Battlefield - any flavour except 2142.

So many excellent suggestions! Thank you! Company of Heroes sounds great, since we both like WWII setting.

What about Battlefield 2, what kind of modes are available to play with a friend and how does it work?

Battlefield, Diablo2, CoH, Freelancer, ArmA (though you'd have to download suitable co-op missions yourself).

Some of the mentioned stuff needs more than 2 players. I don't see how Battlefield would work in this situation, for instance (I don't know mods, though, so maybe there are mods that make it work).

For coop, Rainbow Six should be really high on the list. At the top, actually :).

I haven't played the latest UT, but the older versions had some good 1vs1 maps, so you can get that for adversarial action. Keep in mind that 1 vs. 1 tends to be a frustrating experience if the two players aren't evenly matched.

Marilena, BF1942 has a rather nifty "coop" mode, where all the humans are on one team and AI bots fill all the gaps.

    It's great.

Thank you marilena for clarifying things.

What games have decent bots for deathmatch? One vs one is good if you can get some CPU players to spice up the game. Does UT3 have bot option?

Is BF1942 the only BF with decent 1 vs 1 play options?

Yes indeed it does - great bots too most of the time.

You can also play the single player campaign with two players

Gears of war co-op is a great lark, comes highly recommended by myself - and my numpty mate who plays alongside of course :)

One more question: is Battlefield 2 playable on 1 vs. 1 setup? What modes are available (and which ones are fun to play that way)?

Just wanted to report back how the weekend went. We picked up UT3, BF2 (my friend already had it) and R6 Vegas. All rocked, hard!

Thanks guys, you made our weekend special :)
