    Looked for a thread on this but couldn’t see one. Thought it would be an interesting thing to discuss.

    As of the last year or so I have been gambling online. Just sports. Now I like to think of myself as sensible and I don't have an addictive personality so I don't get hooked.

    With myself we are only talking about a couple of £5/10 bets on the football a week but I can see how easy it is to get out of control and cause real problems and addiction. I myself sometimes want to bet again to chase my money back but don't as I know that this is the start.

    Has anyone here been addicted to gambling or currently are or know anyone that is?

    What is the maximum that you have lost or know that’s someone has lost? I know a few people that will happily spend most of their month's wages on gambling. Its very sad to see and such a waste because they will never beat the house!

    There are quite a few Poker players on here, myself included, other than that though I dont gamble.

    I place the occasional small bet on world\euro cup matches, but I'm not really in to gambling properly.

    I enjoy playing poker with friends, but only for a small amount of money again to make it interesting.

    The most I've ever lost is a tenner, when I foolishly passed up the bet all my friends were doing (Croatia to win at 7/1), changing my mind at the last minute to go for a nil nil draw.

    I almost exclusively bet a pound or two on daft football accumulators, online. I've only ever had one come in, which netted me just over £120, but I'm not too fussed whether I win or lose. I'd rather spend a few quid a week on that, than the lottery tbh.

    I heart Betfair!

    I only make small bets, 5er max but Ill bet on anything pretty much. Football (any country/league), basketball, american football, Ice Hockey but NOT horse racing as it is all fixed.

    I like to stick on multiplier bets following the tips from OLBG, get quite lucky a lot of the time, can be quite unlucky too. Basketball is the best to bet on in my opinion, no draws, quite a big division between a lot of the teams and plenty of good tippers.

    Not sure I was ever a gambling addict but I was a habitual gambler when I was at university. Ashamed to say I spunked large quantities of my parents cash hanging around the bookies with the other wasters. Didn't lose huge amounts but was in there nearly every day so it mounted up.

    Most I ever lost was £600, on a horse I'd been following all summer, it was called Cauda Equina and by the time I placed the bet it had won me roughly that amount through previous bets and I just thought fuck it and lumped it all on, think it came 7th or something.

    In the end I was just losing too much and just thought fuck this so turned to poker, I lost money at that for a few years paying for my poker education but eventually became good enough to turn a modest profit each year.

    I still go to the races with old friends from university days and have a great time, but am very thankful that I never became addicted.

    I've lost a bit on Betfair, but only what I could afford to.
    I was sure I'd found a good system to make weekly profits on several occasions, but they fell apart.
    Drunken Betfair bets are also dangerous.
    I've went back to just using high st, bookies, 'cos it's too easy to bet on Norwegian Cup soccer or whatever online, I was making 5 bets a day at one point.

    my name is gamblor, and its time to prise me from my neon claws!!!

    i have a complicated betting system but its worked for me, can easy spend £100 on a weekend of football, but im also quite safe so even if things dont go particularly well, in theory i should get most if not all of that back.

    used to do something similar for horses when i had the time to flick through the online racing post. might have a punt at that today actually...

    overall, id say im actually up, have had a couple of fairly big wins and im not a habitual gambler, and i dont gamble much of my winnings, i definately know when to quit.

    you just have to follow two very golden rules:
    1) only ever gamble money you can afford to lose
    2) never ever EVER under any circumstances try and chase your losses. walk away, come back another day.

    i also remember getting a large row from the missus about gambling. last jan when i was living down in derby, she took me up to see dundee united play dunfermline for my birthday. i thought that travelling all that way we'll bloody lose or it'll be a nil-nil draw, so i put my money where my mouth was and put £50 on each eventuality.

    sure enough, we go up and despite a late flourish from the terrors (i wouldnt prefered a utd goal tbh), the game ended 0-0 which was 10-1. walking out of the ground i tell kirsty about the bet and explain that ive just won £500. she went ballistic at me for laying on £100 in the first place!

    paid for my wii that did, which i also obtained on that trip.

    I love to gamble, but know that if I let it, it would ruin me. As a teenager/at uni, I was hopelessly addicted to fruit machines, and whilst I would never lose huge amounts, I would think nothing of building a £10-15 into my night's spends. Luckily, the advent of the £25+ jackpot machines killed any interest I had, as you barely won, so the hook isn't there for me anymore.

    I have the odd bet on football, but that is only the odd few quid on accumulators here and there, and place the odd bet on the nags. My main vice is poker, which is profitable for me, just. Since I've started, I haven't had to reload more than once or twice, and cashed out probably £1k or so over 2 years maybe. Not enough to retire and make a living, but a profit is a profit.

    On tilt at the mo though, in a really bad run of form. Picking up some horrendous beats too, but that's for another thread and another group. And poker players, join our group

    Since i have a shit job with shit pay and no prospects, the only way i have been able to afford 'biggish' things is to have a nice 'win' on something. But the old adage is sooooo true. Only bet what you can afford to lose. Even if losing a certain amount makes you feel sick as a dog, at least you can still get by.

    Currently have a £50 bet on Alesha Dixon to win Strictly Come Dancing at 10/1. WOOOHOO! iMac here i come.

    Most I lost was about £700 over the course of 6 weeks in fruit machines. I was a mental drunk and it'd turned into some terrible addiction. Don't play the bleeding things anymore.

    Played poker for a while. Lost £50 over about 3 months playing low-stakes SnG's. Only play rarely now when I have 30 minutes and absolutely nothing to do.

    Only been in a betting shop once and won £50 on a roulette machine. Some reason I've never been back though. Nowadays I stick my money in a savings account and watch the interest roll in :) ...slowly.

    One thing I have discovered though, is that to me it doesn't matter how much I wager or win, just the thrill of winning is enough. Or even that gut-wrenching feeling when you lose - I've play the odd fruit machine emulators and if I don't win, I still get that sinking feeling. Weird.

    I need to buy a fruit machine and stick it in my garage. I like the thrill of playing them. Getting on the features bored and trying to get higher up.

That's phenomenally unlikely, even on the best casino propositions I don't think the house ever has an edge of less than 0.8%. I've often wondered given that there must be many million gamblers in the world that there must by the law of averages be someone who defies the odds, maybe you're him.

    Catterz, same here. Just download a Fruit Machine emulator and all the ROMs. Just google them. I had an enormous library of them, but then lost them all when I had to rebuild my PC. Really quite good fun.

    It's not the same without putting money in. Of course it'd be my money I'm winning, so there's no risk. But it's nice to have £75 chucked out every now and then.

    Yea, those piss me off. Also, none of that dart-board bullshit where you nudge to get your bar even higher when on the board to get triple spins, etc.

    1 win line, 3 reels. 25 or 30p a spin. Nice features board. 8 lights to get on. The option to take whatever prizes you already have when you land on a ? because you know it'll say Lose, Hi/Lo Continue (Lose) or Roll Even (Lose). That's all I ask.

    I don't consider most forms of poker to be gambling in the pure sense. The odds are known and true and there is no house player. Casino games, lottery tickets, bingo and fruit machines are the real gambling nadir, with sports betting only just above them in terms of having any skill input.

    I've lost a tenner here and there, but I've taken more than a grand out of my poker accounts. Seeing as I only put a hundred and fifty quid or so in to them all in total to start and had many hours of entertainment playing, it seems a reasonable deal.

    I've never gambled in my life.

    Stuff like the gambling that goes in in casinos (Las Vegas etc) disturbs me.
