Single speeds with a freewheel just coast along, while fixed gear bikes have a sort of rear wheel braking method where you do a sort of hop of the back of the bike up and lock your knees so the tyre drags and squirms on the Tarmac. You see a lot of fixie warriors doing that - make sure you have the right gear ratio though to maximise your bald spots in the rubber otherwise you'll burn right through them.|
Actual brake pads on a rim or rotor works much better. Slamming the front one on may cause you to go over the top if you panic and take your weight off the bike or shift forward, otherwise it's almost impossible to lock up the front wheel enough to defy gravity in 97% of riding situations.
