Like the protagonist, it's a bit of a mess.
The opening half hour is fantastic, but what follows is a gradual descent into monotony. There's a bizarre romantic sub-plot that goes absolutely nowhere and I had little to no sympathy for any of the characters involved. This is all the more amazing when you consider that Zemeckis was able to create audience emotion from the performance of a volleyball.
Even though the ending was the right one considering the action of the lead, it just wan't satisfying at all.
I will say though that the scene in the hotel room before the inquest was fabulous. That lingering shot on the vodka miniature and last-secong grab was haunting.
When you can't see the angles on the wall you're in trouble.
