Got to say, and although it's a game and not a film, Mark Hamill's Joker in Arkham Asylum is by far my favourite.
I disagree and that is all I have to say about that.

A bit OTT. Nicholson did a great job as Joker and was nominated for awards.
It's cool to be contradictory, and you get extra points if you say the previous - worse version - of a film is better but Ledger outclassed Nicholson and completely owned the character so much it doesn't work in this case.
Ledger "outclass" Nicholson? HAHA!!!
To your point, though, Ledger was excellent.
The highs and low ranges of his vocal performance and the energy and unpredictable nature of the Joker's animation, all came together to make the ultimate incarnation.
In terms of film though, I'd give it to Ledger, even though Nicholson scared the physical shit out of me as a kid... the hand buzzer 0_0
