I had the opposite experience, as I went to see it mostly out of curiosity (with a Cineworld Unlimited pass, I tend to do that now), expecting it to be crap. I was really impressed by how much better it was than I expected. Sure, it wasn't a masterpiece, but it was very well made.

They do a great job of getting you to fall in love with Caesar and he has a great character arc.
CG never quite convinces though and the fact the damn dirty apes never harm the people seemed a bit contrived (no way a windscreen stops a manhole cover frisbee). In fact, you spend the whole film desperate for the "Rise" of the title and then when it happens it's the most disappointing part of the film.
Definitely worth a watch but not as brilliant as I had been lead to believe.
