We do play TtR A LOT as its so easy to set up and go, so we do know the longer destinations roughly. That said, a few carefully placed blocks can really throw a spanner in the works.|
I got the USA version recently too and played that for the first time the other night. It doesn't have tunnels or stations which makes blocking even more of a valid tactic as tunnels are no longer an expensive risk and players can't just fall back on stations to get them out of trouble.
I'd suggest introducing some house rules with the Europe version and ignore the tunnels and don't allow stations.
Also, I just thought: Power Grid is nasty if my 2nd game was anything to go by. Lots of cock blocking in it. You have to do a fair amount of forward planning and mental arithmetic though, so might not be for everyone.
