Arma is complicated. Best thing you can probably do to begin with is play the single-player infantry showcase a few times, until you can complete it. It'll help you get used to the new stances(hold LCTRL & W/S/A/D to adjust stances), combat etc.
Yes, the enemy will see you from several hundred metres. As soon as shots are fired, you should be hitting the deck and crawling/crouch-running for cover. Usual engagement ranges in Arma are anything from CQB to 500+ metres, and a single bullet can kill, so you want to be careful.
In SP (and most MP), your map will show you your objectives/tasks etc, so check the map for info on where to do & what to do.
Joining multiplayer is a very different beast. MP can have so many different types of game-modes, you should check what you're joining before you jump in. Servers labeled 'CO-OP 10' etc are co-op missions, probably your best starting point. Wasteland servers are giant survival-esque missions, and I forget what the war-zone ones are called, but they're generally larger-scale missions with multiple squads attempting to take & control territory.
Start with the SP, and when you're comfortable with it, try some co-op. Don't dive into random MP missions, if you do try MP, always use voice and try to talk to the people you're playing with. Be willing to learn, and some community vets will go easy on you. Nailing friendly choppers is bound to get you raged at, but you'll get the hang of it..gif)
Given that Tiger's on the case with missions already, and I'm having a play around with the editor myself, might soon be time to resurrect the old sunday night slot!
Edit: Also have keys, pm or post in thread.gif)
