In under 20 minutes farming mobs a humanity will appear in your counter. You can then use this to summon.
Or even get summoned/kill boss to earn humanity. 
to be honest i havnt really summoned anyone apart from the npcs and havnt been summoned before its something havnt played about with. ( i know you are all about to tell me im missing out on a mjor part of the game big style)
