Games are, on the whole, shallow time fillers. They say nothing. They communicate nothing. The writers have no angle to convey, no moral to shed light on. The stories are vehicles to drive gameplay mechanics and engines that the developer has recently invested in and seeing what they can do with. The narrative is never central, it's secondary.
So the answer to the OP is yes.
I will never understand why gamers (on forums) are so desperate to get gaming validated.
Most of the top 10 games list of various sites and publications have games with very shallow stories.
