I think Shenmue is the first game I played that had a genuine emotional effect on me. I liken it to reading a good book that sparks different feelings from excitement to happiness to melancholy.
The times you spent lonely wandering the streets at night were beautifully punctuated by the action set-pieces and RTE's. I think it was also the first game I played that triggered specific scenarios based on the time of day.
Would I be right in saying it was the first "game within a game" release? Playing actual games in the arcade, yet another WOW moment for the console.
