I had an ion weapon and two anti-ship drones, which is just evil. The drones make short work of any shields, then whatever systems the drones damage just target those systems with the ion weapon to prevent them fixing it.

Well, until I ran out of drone parts, then I was a sitting duck as I had no means at all of damaging enemy ships.
I think from now on I'll always keep one laser as backup rather than selling them all for peanuts.
