I will have to experiment with how far a torch can be placed from ice, it may dictate how high ceilings would have to be.
The danger is that a broken block will flood everywhere and cannot easily be replaced without re-doing every single block directly above it. Would be interesting to see what would happen if a creeper exploded in there.
The blocks are translucent though and it is lit inside during the day.
