Fireplace has been removed - turned out to be a piece of cake, job done in under an hour, including taking up the carpet and cleaning up afterwards.
Just went round the whole thing with a bolster until I'd exposed the lugs - they weren't even screwed in, just held on with twists of wire. Cut those and then gently prised it away from the wall, leaving a fireplace shaped hole in the plaster.
Amazingly my girlfriend managed to get the tiled hearth up as well, with only 3 broken tiles.
All in all a lot easier than I'd expected... now just need to fit the damn thing in my house
