If you're talking about overgrasp pullups (palms facing away from you) then no, you're probably doing it fine.
It's a very specific exercise that, unless you practice it, is very difficult. Lots of people cannot do one.
If you have an assisted pullup bar in the gym practice with that - I'd say try the usual three sets of ten with say 40 kilos assist, and just knock five kilos off every time they get easy.
If you don't have a pullup assist station then do lateral pulldowns. Here I would start doing about 40 kilos and add five every time. Eventually you should be able to do unassisted pullups.
Stick with it, it gives you that triangular back women love.
