If you go to your GP chances are they'll put you on an antidepressant, which a) don't work very well, b) have side effects (sexual dysfunction anyone?) and c) are harder to quit than crack. |
I'm having a hell of a time trying to get off Effexor ( venlafaxine). I tapered over a month, on Dr's advice, and had brain zaps, loss of appetite, nausea/vomiting, extreme anxiety, feeling " overstimulated", akathisia (motor restlessness), burning nerves, hot flashes, suicidal thoughts, etc. It got so bad I had to go back on. Even tapering slowly is a nightmare.
Mindfulness meditation has been shown to alter the structure of the brain in ways which may be beneficial to those suffering from depression. http://marc.ucla.edu/
Also, CBT is good for depression. It involve challenging your negative thoughts with more realistic ones. I recommend this book http://www.tao3.com/index.html
