I'm a salad cream man myself, but mayonnaise is alright with chips.
Has to be decent, Belgian style mayo though, the stuff in the UK is like flavourless white jelly.
I think a lot of sc's appeal is that you can squeeze it over stuff so it's distributed across the plate - mayo is dollops at best.
