I loved it. plot could have been fleshed out more, but I kinda liked that when "weird things" start happening, you didn't have someone popping up every five minutes explaining what was happening, or why (i was pleasantly surprised the old guy didn't start doing - it was interesting to see everyone just getting on with it as if there was absolutely nothing strange about what was taking place)

    what i loved: (spoilers ahoy).

    * genuinely didn't notice the transition from "run down insane asylum" to "fancy looking house of sleaze", assuming one was a front for the other. they actually did manage to catch me with the sucker punch at the end as a result. whoops.

    * the train fight was the best sustained balls out matrix-y section I've seen in years. what must have been a sly nod to the Superpunch from revolutions made me chuckle.

    * as paperthin as some of the characters were, i was still rooting for them all the way through. i was also genuinely surprised when they started killing them off.

    * i liked the way they reinforced the "reality" of the sleaze house when rocket was about to die - watching babydoll desperately flip between her manga fantasy and the kitchen was clearly designed to make you think the sleaze house was the real world, when it obviously wasn't. nothing massive, but a nice touch.

    * the ending was unexpected, and makes me wonder how the other girls actually ended up dying because of course what you see in the brothel is just more of babydoll trying to cope with reality. Pretty nasty when the brothel is what she dreams up to escape.

    * the slightly surreal final sequence, complete with bus driving angel tying nicely into the opening speech. was this bit even real, or did she die like the rest?

I dunno, i think the film has had a lot of unfair stick.

I also think the endless "hur hur girls fighting in their undies" thing is nonsense. the outfits in the brothel are mostly one piece bodysuits that wouldn't look out of place in a dance school, and the dreamworld outfits show the odd flashes of leg but not much more - I regularly see comic superheroes with more flesh on display.

Gets a solid 8/10 from me.
