I went to Comet at the weekend and it was very exciting. There, before my eyes, was a shop filled with electric televisions from the future.
I went to Comet because I was close and the finance 6-month pay idea is attractive, as I no longer have any actual money to buy a telly outright.
I liked this. Part of my reason for going was to see what the Plasma difference was. The image, in my opinion, was warmer and truer to how the picture should look without silly sharpening and brightening and all those other tweaks. I did not see normal TV channels in operation. It's also worth noting that at £750 Comet is also throwing in a £250 5.1 surround DVD thing. I don't care about the DVD player but the speakers may be nice.
When I asked a chap (that obviously knew what he was talking about), he pointed me towards backlit LED tellies which, yes, are newer and more expensive. Bright they were, but also vacant and sterile, like an overlit hospital hallway. Too sharp, bright and LCD-ey, which is a shit way of explaining it but an image I can't shake. The bloke said it was a series 6, er, Samsung I think. I can't remember :S May have been this one.
Anyway, and this is finally my point - he was convinced that LED backlit tellies are better. I concede that they use less power and are very slim and yes that is attractive, but to my eyes I still prefer the picture of the plasma (although the LED picture seemed to move more smoothly).
The man said you can adjust LEDs to give off a much much better picture than plasma, and the reason I ask you lot is because I want to know if that is true.
If an LED picture is better than a plasma picture, I will buy LED. Simple. If an LED picture is nearly as good, moves better, and the power consumption difference is drastic and worth taking note of - I will buy LED.
I'd also love to know if £750 for that Panasonic plasma at the top is a good price.
Sorry for the waffle, but I am quite in two minds and would like to defer to someone with actual proper experience!
