It's more an issue with needing VPN to get around the Great Firewall, it just adds all sorts of painful latency and really variable buffering. Also some places sense you're on VPN and just kill the connection (Google included, which makes searching fun: if I do it in China the Great Firewall kills it; if I do it via VPN, Google kills it ).|
Usenet is perfect because I can just open more and more server connections, even if they're all quite low transfer rates, until I've maxxed out my line.
My peak transfer rate is great (faster than the UK, actually) but latency for anything outside of China, especially streaming, is bobbins. I've barely streamed a video in the last 8 months. I'm getting withdrawal from game and movie trailers.
