To be honest both mags are really great. |
I've been reading Edge since issue 15, and while the staff have been shuffled over the years, along with the content (how I miss the Gallery section), it's always been choc full of sweet article content, that many other games mags just can't touch. Sure, it's a bit high brow, but I love that about it, for its like the games industry's Empire magazine, that even EGM etc have tried to emulate. As any gamer matures, the more they will love and understand it.
Edge is also the only games magazine that I still buy, and I've also manage to keep hold of all my issues, while many other games mags have been tossed and recycled. If you like ego stroking reviews, don't buy it. If you want in depth looks at industry topics and peoples, that websites lack, for that its an awesome read. (any one who thinks Edge is up its arse is blind, for if you don't want to understand why what you play is so awesome or not, then just ignore it).
Games TM is also a worthy contender, to sit alongside Edge, and while not as classy as Edge, has carved its own niche out to survive where many mags have failed. They have some great articles too, about side of games that are rarely covered, and yes indeed, their retro section is outstanding. Loved their article on japanese Dojinshi games. Long live Games TM, even how things are with print media.
However, if you are of a simpler mind, where mags are only about reviews and previews, dodge these fine mags and stick to Gamesmaster and dumb single format fanboy mags.
