I got the hardcover one illustrated by Alan Lee ( http://www.tolkien.co.uk/product/9780261102309/The+Lord+of+the+Rings+ ) and it's beautiful with great paintings in it. Only problem is it's big and heavy so a bit of a ballache to read. It's more for decoration and my original cheap and knackered paperback set are for reading.|
One of the best presents I've got was a 100 year old hardback copy of A Tale of Two Cities, beautiful and full of history and was only like £20 !! If you can find an old and beautiful copy of LOTR for your sister you might be onto a winner. Think it was from http://www.abebooks.co.uk/ which has loads of old and classic books for sale.
Also if you want to make it really special, make a bookmark. I cross-stitched a bookmark for my mum once and she thinks it's the best present she's ever had.
