From what I've played of V so far, it actually lives up the promise of a GTA game. The missions for one are much more varied and interesting than in previous GTAs (it's not just a case of "drive here, shoot these guys, escape from cops"), and the region is actually fun to explore on foot. Of course, it helps if you can make your own fun and just enjoy driving around and listening to music.
I do feel it's a shame that the game is so controversial and violent with despicable protagonists, as it leads to a lot of people overlooking or ignoring the artistic and technical achievements of the game.
