    Strictly speaking, most drops are manageable, but I think it's a good habit to evaluate whether or not each drop from the jungle onwards needs a rope, because descending on a rope gives so much more control when things look mental below and frogs etc get triggered. Spelunky's about risk management as much as anything else.
    I think with experience it's not necessary though. A quick look down is usually enough to evaluate the situation down below, and find the next safe ledge to jump to. I usually save ropes for when I need to escape out of a tight spot (usually in the temple), or need access to get certain items or the altar.
