It covers everything, offers a lot and continues to offer more. THe only 4x that actually provides a 'living' galaxy. Shit is happening that isn't just military ships going back and forth. You'll see the private sector venture out putting mining stations on the fringes of your territory, maybe even beyond! (they'll have to accept far stations like that can't be protected by you promptly!)
Simple but effective spacey fleet combat, ship to ship boarding actions, carriers, fighters, ground combat, shit loads of events, multi-racial empires (which feels more authentic in a space setting)
The barriers of entry to this game is pricing for the base game and its two expansions (third one on the way) and then a fourth after that with more modding options. The second barrier is the aesthetic of the UI, but honestly, if you were comfortable with MOO and older strat games, that isn't going to be an issue and you can invest your imagination in to a 1400 star galaxy.
It is, to me, the 4x that provides that full feel of authenticity. Every other one feels like it hinges on one gimmick or another, Stardrive being combat, but it does look pretty), Star Ruler is being just a soulless resource management. etc. etc.
