I am thinking the OP's grandparents had a healthy dose of rose tinted spectacles. Everything was always better in the past once people get past a certain age.

What sort of job could you leave on a Friday and then get another on a Monday? It would not be a shit low paying job that allowed you to live a life of poverty would it?

My granddad on my mother’s side kept a diary of his life during the 1930's and it really did not sound great. Leaving a job was rarely his choice and he was constantly out of work and on the road looking for another job that would often only be a weeks’ worth of work. There was no wealthfare state at that time so you really were on you own and times were very hard for normal folk.
