I read all this and keep wondering : why are people involved in gaming so intent on claiming it's an art form ? |
There's no better way of sullying gaming than comparing it to the arts. Not that one is inferior to the other : they have completely different ways of involving you. Different points to make, and different ways of being relevant to their times and places.
Games get you to interact, and use story, visuals and sound to do so ; art holds you in a paradoxal state of collaborative passivity. That they might make use of similar material to do so does not make them alike in any way.
Let's put it like this : would you say chess is sculpture because it has you move sculpted figurines around ? Of course not !
The same goes for story, sound and graphics in a video game.
Storytelling is not an art in and of itself. Most art works have absolutely nothing do with that.
