At what point did I say that I thoughht the OT were bad films? I don't. But if you can't see that they were more amazing in the context of the time they were first made then I think you must still wear bell bottoms and watch the banana Splits when you get home from school at 4.
I contunally find this sort of comment insulting. As adults (and film buffs) we're unable to decern whats good and whats bad because we enjoyed them as kids??! It's bullshit. For starters, as 8 year olds we enjoyed the films for the same reasons that some kids enjoy the PT - at a superficial level - because they're ONLY FUCKING EIGHT.
They really weren't. Seeing these in the cinema at the time was jaw dropping for effects.
The original series was about story and character, the prequels were about special effects and CGI set-pieces.
The story is as basic as can be. Our adult minds have filled in the blanks in the intervening years.
As you grow up you start to appreciate other aspects of films, both new and old. We can now see that the OT were brillant films. Stuff I also used to like when I was 8 such a Godzilla and Sinbad etc are fucking crap!! These kids that currently like the PT could well grow up and think they're shit.
In short, I can tell the difference as a grown up between a good film I used to love and a bad film I used to love. Jeez.
As a youngster viewing them now they simply don't have the same impact. It doesn't make me love them any less, nor should it you.
And for what it's worth my kids will sit and watch ET over and over again, not so with the OT. Which upsets me greatly but there you go.
