I think it depends what type of games you play. Take for instance I used to play a lot of JRPGs especially Final Fantasy and as I didn't read books that much this more than made up for that and meant my skills are good.|
Playing games like Metroid/Zelda help with problem solving and make you think more where as FPS games improve your reaction skills and help you differentiate colours more easily (more specifically shades of grey).
These skills have been proven to help when applied to real life applications ie surgery/pilots/driving etc.
The educative uses of gaming are usually not taken into consideration or taken seriously which is a shame.
